Summary

1140. Oliver Pascal chances upon a village raided by mercenaries and rescues the survivors: an orphaned boy, who is the illegitimate son of the old king, and a young widow named Catrin.

After escorting them to Bristol Castle, they are accepted into the household of Robert of Gloucester, and while Catrin finds herself falling in love with Oliver she becomes bored with the frivolity of court life.

Thus when the old midwife Etheldreda offers to teach her the secrets of her ancient art, Catrin agrees. But the midwife's life is fraught with dangers - in the shape of two men, both killers and both of whom threaten the couple's lives....

A fabulous read

This book has me in for old from beginning to end. The twists and turns throughout the novel kept me hooked until the end I couldn’t put the book down and was faced with that awful conundrum of reading the book as quickly as I could and drawing it out to make it last longer! I loved the characters and by the end think I had grown a little too fond of Oliver I love how the book is based on historical facts but has the thread of fictionality running throughout it is also great that the author leaves a reading list of useful material but afterwards and I thoroughly intend to check out the books on mediaeval herb ology and female folklore. This is a brilliant book if you like history love and intrigued.

Evocative of the period

So well researched and , apart from rather too much bodice ripping , an engrossing story. Will certainly listen to another book by this author. Brilliant narration .

Superb. I enjoyed both the story and the narration

The history of the time was made real through the telling of the story. I thought the narrator's 'voices' brought the characters to life. Very much enjoyed this audio book.
