After the sudden death of her daughter Alice, Queen Victoria took an obsessive interest in the marriage prospects of the four girls their mother had left behind, hoping this might secure for them a happy future. And each of the young women did indeed marry into a European dynasty: the Romanovs and the Hohenzollerns of Germany. I found this a fascinating read about four really interesting women. They lived such eventful lives and for two of them, tragic deaths.

I’ve long since been fascinated by this branch of Queen Victoria’s family and this book did not disappoint. I learned a great deal from it. The narration was good apart from Jilly Bond’s insistence on saying Grand Duke Serge (as in Surge) instead of the correct pronunciation, which is Sergei (Ser-gay). Maybe something to correct?
