About this listen

Immerse yourself in an Audible Original production of The Little Mermaid.

A magical retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale, narrated by singer-songwriter Leigh-Anne Pinnock. Produced in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, and featuring vocals from anaiis, Kersha Bailey, Sariah Rowe and Nadine Samuels, this is The Little Mermaid like you’ve never heard it before.

Deep beneath the ocean, there is a shimmering palace. Built of coral walls and windows of clearest amber, it is the kingdom of the merpeople. And one of these mermaids you might know well: she is the youngest, and is gifted with the most beautiful voice.

Unhappy with her life as a mermaid, she dreams of living on dry land. One day, on her birthday, she ascends to the surface to find a magnificent three-masted ship drifting in calm waters. There, amongst the passengers, she meets the brown-eyed prince.

To win his affection, the little mermaid sells a piece of herself—and is faced with a monumental choice.

So put on your headphones, close your eyes and join Leigh-Anne Pinnock on a journey to the depths of the ocean.

For younger listeners, parental guidance is advised.

About the author

Dina Gregory is a storyteller and lyricist who hails from Devon, England. She is a graduate of Somerville College, Oxford University, and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Her musicals, plays, songs and choral anthems have been performed internationally at venues large and small, including Hoxton Hall and Her Majesty’s Theatre.
As lyricist/librettist, her works include an all-star recording of musical My Marcello, released by Broadway Records (2021) and Words Apart, published by Choristers Guild (2020). As author, Dina has penned over twenty stories for Audible, including the short stories Gingerella and The Chocolate Tree, and the full-length Audible Original adaptation of The Wind in the Willows, featuring an acclaimed cast of actors and with music by her twin sister, Rosabella Gregory.

In the popular imagination, The Little Mermaid has morphed into a happy-ever-after fairytale… thanks, perhaps, to singing crustaceans and a certain redhead! But Hans Christian Andersen devised a more sinister ending for his sea-born heroine. Never destined to marry the prince, this voiceless outsider is forsaken by a world that deems her “other.” With Leigh-Anne Pinnock narrating this adaptation, I saw an opportunity to reclaim both Andersen’s vision and the little mermaid’s voice. As a biracial writer, I’m inspired by Leigh-Anne’s advocacy. Against the odds, she vaulted to pop stardom–only to discover an industry and fanbase often hostile to women of color. Undaunted, she has used her experience to speak out against racism. Who better, then, to give voice to a mermaid who, like Leigh-Anne, follows a dream, endures its trials, and grows stronger for it.
