About this listen

It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends.

It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up...

Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds.

In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

Laying bare the comfortable conventions of rural England, this spine-tingling story pulses with suspense until the whiplash double-twist of the denouement.

Love this, the narration was great. A great listen. I couldn’t atop and heard it in 2 days. A record for me.

Loved everything about this tale so cleverly written and thought out. I read the story several years ago but really enjoyed listening.

Fantastic story with the best twist

Marvelously frustrating

This is very different from Phillipa
Gregory’s usual historical novels. I read it some years again and remembered how I enjoyed the book and I really enjoyed the audible version.

Clever story and plot

The blurb said this was tense and unpredictable…. But it really wasn’t at all. Very predictable, in fact, including the ending. Nicely read, though, and entertaining enough to pass a few hours.

Has Phillipa Gregory ever had children? In this book the poor baby seemed to be weaned at 9 weeks, talking at just a few months, and developing self feeding skills before most kids are even eating finger food. It did make it all rather hard to suspend disbelief!

Not up to her usual standard
