Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of The Little Book of Hygge, written and read by Meik Wiking.

Denmark is often said to be the happiest country in the world. That's down to one thing: hygge.

'Hygge has been translated as everything from the art of creating intimacy to cosiness of the soul to taking pleasure from the presence of soothing things. My personal favourite is cocoa by candlelight....'

You know hygge when you feel it. It is when you are cuddled up on a sofa with a loved one or sharing comfort food with your closest friends. It is those crisp blue mornings when the light through your window is just right.

Who better than Meik Wiking to be your guide to all things hygge? Meik is CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen and has spent years studying the magic of Danish life. In this beautiful, inspiring audiobook, he will help you be more hygge: from picking the right lighting and planning a dinner party through to creating an emergency hygge kit and even how to dress.

Meik Wiking is the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen. He is committed to finding out what makes people happy and has concluded that hygge is the magic ingredient that makes Danes the happiest people in the world.

Great idea but not much for the diverse among us

If you could sum up The Little Book of Hygge in three words, what would they be?

I love the whole idea of hygge! Its brilliant and I want to adopt the practice. The quality of the recording is brilliant. I love that Meik himself did the narration, it gives the book an incredible sense of authenticity. However, unfortunately the book seems to make very little accommodation for the sustainably minded, vegetarians among us.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

ended very well

What does Meik Wiking bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The Danish accent gives authenticity to the narration

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no

Made me change a few things

This book was definitely enlightening and has already led me to make some small changes. It was the perfect time of year to read it - November. The evenings are getting darker and it is the longest school term.

This is always a time where its easy to let the weather get you down and to feel hard done by. I've already bought a wall hanging and fairy lights to make our seating area more cosy. I've invested in more candles. I've been doing crosswords with my partner which feel like a small but homey thing to do.

I also have in my mind to do more. Making some effort to cook some really lovely, special meals is something I want to do. I also want to invite friends around for a games night before the month ends.

This book was inspiring and has, literally, already changed my life for the better. For that reason, I have to give it 5 stars!

Listening to this book is hygge

Hygge isn't rocket science, but hearing it direct from a Dane who's job it is to figure out what makes people happy is well worth your time. His other audiobooks are also worth listening to.

Hurry up and Relax!!!

Would you listen to The Little Book of Hygge again? Why?

Hmm there are bits I'd love to hear again although I wouldn't want to hear a detailed account of Danish lamp design again - it's a little hardcore for the unitiated.

Any additional comments?

It is a gentle and funny book and very necessary given the appalling state of lighting, friendship, plastics in the home, obsessively political discussions and poor choices in knitwear that afflicts all of (western consumerist) society.

Quite seriously though it made me schedule more cosy tea-on-the-sofa sessions with friends.
