Summary

If you don't know Simon Scarrow, you don't know Rome!

The Legion is the action-packed tenth novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. Perfect for fans of Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden.

Egypt, AD 49. Cato, one of the youngest Prefects of the Roman army, and Centurion Macro have a tough posting: to track down and destroy a gang of former gladiators who have turned to piracy. Driven by vengeance, these hardened brutes have been defiling temples, sinking Roman ships, and slaughtering men, women and children.

What's worse is that they are doing it all under the name of Macro and Cato, in an attempt to stir up a rebellion against the occupying forces. And it's working. If Macro and Cato don't stop the pirates in time, it could be the beginning of the end for the Roman Empire.

Macro and Cato Going on a Bear Hunt

I still love these books. There is little better a way to while away some hours than in the company of Marco and Cato especially with the excellent Jonathan Keeble at the microphone. This one sees our two heroes led a rather merry dance by their nemesis, the ex-gladiator Ajax. There's lots of great action and a slightly unexpected conclusion as Scarrow once again delivers a high quality adventure. There is also a decent twist in the plot near the end which I personally didn't see coming.

If you like the previous ones you should be as happy as me again with the one small proviso that Ajax's continuing survival does take a little bit of swallowing as the book goes on. Still one of my favourite series though.

Typical Macro & Cato jaunt

An enjoyable if not a little predictable adventure. Set in Egypt and makes for a good back drop. Would like to see another Eastern posting for the pair.
The likeable Macro is still a man's man, and live his humour. The brilliant but boring Cato comes in to his own in this story and we get a glimpse of his future potential.
The battle scenes are just like previous books, and follow history pretty well but with a good dose of artistic licence, which doesn't really detract from the story or make it unbelievable.
Noticed an increase in foul language (which is very life like) but means my 14 year old lad can't read this book.

Continuation of the Same boring Ajax story

More of the same. These books are basically 3 story archs dragged out. The main difference here is that Cato gets half his usual brains alongside some rubbish plot twists. Yawn

Macro

Another great listen from simon scarrow
Just one thing. Johnathan keeble is probably the best narrator on audible but stangely
Macro seems to change from being quite well spoken to a rough cockney hard man
Wasnt sure if it was Cato or Macro speaking at times
But still very enjoyable

Macro and Cato return again!

Another brilliant title from Simon Scarrow. Scratches the itch every time. Great writing with enough Acton and engaging story it’s the same formula with a few twists to ranks. All in all a great listen

Great book

My first audible listen was worthwhile, so clear and easy to listen to. It was also a great storyline too.

Excellent Story

Followed the narrative with ease. The narrator has a great range of voices for the different characters. Looking forward to the next book.

amazing

If you're a fan of Roman fiction, then you absolutely have to check out this series of books. They are simply perfect, and the Audible version is made even better thanks to the incredible performance by Jonathan Keeble. His narration is pitch-perfect, keeping the pace just right and bringing all the right emotions to the story. It's so refreshing to find an audiobook where the reader doesn't let you down, and Keeble absolutely nails it with this one. So if you're looking for a gripping, immersive Roman adventure, look no further than this series - you won't regret it!

This was a challenge

I have enjoyed this series until this book. The problem for me is I love fiction based on some factual events. I have liked the books at the start of the series. However, this and the last one has irritated me. I cannot stand Ajax, or his story. Maybe this was the writers intention. I felt just as frustrated as Macro and Cato were, as they chased him around in the last couple of books.
It was a relief to finish it. I look forward to listening to the next book in the series.
Jonathan Keeble is a great narrator of the characters and the performance was super.
