Summary

This is an audio-enhanced version of Washington Irving's classic tale of horror and suspense, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" - complete with sound effects and a musical soundtrack. It relates the story of Ichabod Crane, the lanky Tarrytown schoolmaster who is vying for the hand of the local beauty Katrina Van Tassel, along with local strongman and bully Brom Bones. After attending a party at the Van Tassels' one fall night, Crane learns of the legend of the mysterious and spectral Headless Horseman, who rides by night and terrorizes those who dare to travel Tarrytown by night. Traveling home after the party that night, the superstitious (and romantically crestfallen) Crane spies a fellow rider in the woods. A rider...without a head!

An American Halloween tradition since its publication in 1820, Irving's tale is a classic of the genre and a thrilling holiday yarn.

A Classic Halloween Tale

The Legend if Sleepy Hollow is a classic American story that is perfect to read around Halloween. This version is well narrated and has great special effects added in. It’s not too scary and suitable for all ages. My husband and I enjoyed listening to this last night together and talked about the differences in this original book and the Johnny Depp movie. It is amazing how much Hollywood can add to an original classic! I love classic books so thoroughly enjoyed this and you will too.

Another Fabulous Narration by Kevin Theis

Kevin Theis has a real talent with how he narrates, dramatizes, and does sound effects in his narration. Of all of the books I have listened to by him, I barely noticed the sound effects as they were faint and very sparse throughout the book. He is so good at putting them just where they are needed though.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a classic I knew nothing about going into it, except that there was a headless horseman. I found the book good, but wished Irving had elaborated on some more points in this classic. It is a great listen during the autumn or anyone who just likes a quick, classic ghost legend.

I received a copy of this book at my request, and I have voluntarily left this review.

Sly, savvy, scary

This cleverly produced audiobook teases out all the threads in this classic American story and weaves them together to deliver plenty more than its VERY SCARY (even when you know how it turns out) ENDING.

Always hungry, and not just for food, Ichabod Crane and his testosterone-unbalanced rivalry with “Brom Bones” had me laughing out loud, to my surprise, more than once. At least Five of the Seven Deadlies (greed, lust, gluttony envy, pride; arguably wrath and sloth) jostle for position; thematically, the use and abuse of power—physical, economic, sexual, political—provides strong narrative support without intruding on the story, and contemporary relevance as well.

Oh, and those descriptions of scenery you skip because they make your eyes glaze over? (C’mon, admit it.) Narrator Kevin Theis turns them into gold-framed Hudson River landscapes you want to stand in front of juuuuuust a little longer … And did I mention IT’S SCARY!?!

Especially recommended as an introduction to Irving, and for anyone looking for an engaging companion on your commute.
