Summary

Some bury their secrets close to home, others scatter them to the wind and hope they land somewhere far away.

Judith Kratt inherited all the Kratt family had to offer - the pie safe, the copper clock, the murder that no one talks about - and she knows in her old bones that it's time to make an inventory of her household and its valuables. But she finds that cataloging the family belongings - as well as their misfortunes - won't contain her family's secrets, not when her wayward sister suddenly returns, determined to expose skeletons that the Kratts had hoped to take to their grave.

Interweaving the present with chilling flashbacks from one fateful evening in 1929, Judith pieces together the influence of her family on their small South Carolina cotton town, learning that the devastating effects of dark family secrets can last a lifetime and beyond.

Not what I expected

The book was a little slow at times but picked up toward the middle as the various memories started to intertwine. I loved the memories attached to the various inventory items. The story did leave several unanswered questions however.

Loved It!!

My book club chose this book to discuss at our next meeting. I am so glad they did. I loved the story, the details and all the characters really came to life! Bernadette Dunbar did an excellent job as a narrator! I was sad when when I finished the book because I miss the characters. I miss their stories. I want more of their lives!

Free and totally worth it!

This book was really good. Some have commented on the slow start but the cadence was perfect to me. The author mixed in the ingredients (characters) just right for the story to rise. I have no idea why Audible made it a free book but had I known of its existence, this book is definitely credit worthy!

One of the Best I’ve Listened to in Awhile

Before downloading the book, I read reviews. One said the reviewer had listened for an hour and a half and still didn’t know what the book was about. I cannot imagine that reaction to this book. I was captured from the first paragraph. The writing expertise, the engaging story, the perfect narrator, all combined to create a book whose richness kept my imagination engaged for hours.

Can’t take it!

Listened for 1.5 hours and the book still reveals no plot!!! It’s an old lady babbling for over an hour and nothing is really said!

Loved this story

It was a bit hard for me to get into it in the first few chapters, but I stuck with it and am glad I did. It was a good story, with ups and downs and a few twists, but in the end it came together nicely. It’s an easy story for when you just want to escape your thoughts for a while, also the narrator’s voice is very soothing to listen to.
