Summary
From the Sunday Times top 10 best-selling author of The Silent Sister and Big Lies in a Small Town comes a powerful, gripping and unmissable new novel.
Secrets won't stay silent for ever.
2020. A recently widowed architect moves into the home she and her late husband designed, heartbroken that he will never cross the threshold. But when disturbing things begin to happen, it's clear that someone is sending her a warning. Who is trying to frighten her away and why?
1965. A young white female student becomes involved in the fight for civil rights in North Carolina, falling in love with one of her fellow activists, in a time and place where an interracial relationship must be hidden from family, friends and especially the re-emerging Ku Klux Klan. As tensions rise in the town, she realises not everyone is who they appear to be.
Decades later, past and present are set to collide in the last house on the street....

Engrossing and shocking
This was a dual time frame story set in the 60s during the civil rights campaigns and in modern times. As the book progresses, the two stories become entwined, leading to the inevitable truth. The story is about love and family, justice and responsibility.
The reader’s gentle southern voice was just perfect for the book.

One of the best
This is one of the most engrossing books I have listened to. The narrator is amazing and carries you along with the story set between the mid sixties and the civil rights movement in America’s south to the present day when old wounds surface.
At first I didn’t realise we were hearing two different times but as soon as I did the story made sense and I couldn’t stop listening.
I am going to look for more books by Diane Chamberlain because she’s a superb storyteller.
Highly recommended

Very moving
This story is very moving and the wonderful narration was sympathetic to the tale. This book really makes one grateful that social attitudes to race have improved.

Such a good story.
I love Diane Chamberlain’s work. She covers difficult subjects that make you think and can be comfortable, while creating characters you invest in. This one is no exception.
