Summary
In the good old days, magic was powerful, unregulated by government, and even the largest spell could be woven without filling in magic release form B1-7g.
Then the magic started fading away....
Fifteen-year-old Jennifer Strange runs Kazam, an employment agency for soothsayers and sorcerers. But work is drying up. Drain cleaner is cheaper than a spell, and even magic carpets are reduced to pizza delivery.
So it's a surprise when the visions start. Not only do they predict the death of the Last Dragon at the hands of a dragonslayer, they also point to Jennifer, and say something is coming: Big Magic....

a light hearted read
I've read a couple of the Thursday Next books and enjoyed them, but this was more light hearted and would recommend it.

Clever and Good
I'm a Jasper Fforde fan (so slightly biased) but a fantastic book. Although written with young teenagers in mind, I'm in my thirty's and loved it. Clever storyline and nice friendly reading by Collingwood.

loved it. So much better than the TV version. Though that was a reasonable attempt.

Magic
Chosen because I saw the film on tv, I hoped it would be as good but I found it to be fascinatingly different and written so delightfully, that I would compare it to Douglas Adams, or Terry pratchet. Brilliant, now to look for more by the same author. Thanks

Couldn't listen
i can't comment on the story, I usually like Jasper pfforde but the voise of the reader was so grating as the book wore on I couldn't bare it. Too high pitched and she hardly modulated her speech at all!! Shame it seemed like it could've been another fun story from him

Another fantastic world by Fforde
Fforde is a master at creating believable and interesting fantasy worlds, which are based on our own reality but with significant differences. The worlds are well thought through and contain all the complex relationships, politics, geographical locations, and tedious paperwork of our world, but with magic, dragons and alternative histories which give a rich background. Unlike with some fantasy books, where the background story overloads you information, Fforde writes in an intelligent and humorous way which conveys just the right amount of information for the story and leaves your mind to fill in any details. The characters are likeable, and as with Fforde’s other works, it’s refreshing to read the adventures of capable female leads with real emotions.
This audiobook is very enjoyable and I am excited to listen to more in this series.

Watched the TV show, loved the book
I downloaded this audiobook after watching the TV film at Christmas. The books was sufficiently different to the film to make it worth listening to plus we get to find out what happens next in the next book! Loved this!

Drivel
This is possibly one of the worst books I have ever had the displeasure of reading. The characters of the book were at best disappointing. Despite my ill feelings for the boom I did like some of the subtle jokes that were made.
