About this listen

The Lakota Way received the prestigious Audie Award, considered the "Oscar" award of the audiobook industry, in 2004 for the category of best inspirational audio.

The myth of Deer Woman teaches a lesson on respect. The legend of Crazy Horse illuminates a lesson on humility. And the story of Eagle brings home the importance of compassion. These stories from the heart of Lakota culture and its survival, and their meanings, still resonate deeply with our daily lives.

Rich with storytelling, history, folklore, and Marshall's own personal experiences, The Lakota Way expresses the heart of Native American philosophy and the 12 core qualities that are crucial to the Lakota way of living: bravery, fortitude, generosity, wisdom, respect, honor, perseverance, love, humility, sacrifice, truth, and compassion.

Compelling and profound, The Lakota Way gives a fresh outlook to those searching for a new perspective on spiritual and ethical living.

Where does The Lakota Way rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of my top favourite audiobooks

What about Joseph M. Marshall’s performance did you like?

The narrator's voice is soothing and leaves time for his words to penetrate

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The book begins with a story about coping with bullying that is beautifully simple and full of wisdom. I look forward to sharing this story with some of the children I work with who struggle with bullying at school.

Listened to this while I was decorating my house and in desperate need of inspiration. Lakota Folklore, a few modern tales & interesting historical events are woven together seamlessly. Plus Joseph Marshall has an amazingly resonant, calming voice! Took me right back to story time at school! My favourite time of day. Great for adults & older children too.

Like being read to by your favourite teacher!

It was a wonderful glimpse into the Lakota way of life, the wisdom and teachings from their elders.

It was also sad to listen to how their way of life was destroyed. We could learn so much of how to treat the earth and other animals from listening to these tales. The narrator was brilliant and brought it to life and I didn't want it to end

An excellent book with so much wisdom from the past

Joseph M Marshall reads this book perfectly. His style is conversational and not rushed, allowing time to reflect on what has been described. The content is essential and a great demonstration on survival and reflection.

Absolutely beautiful and precious account of the Lakota ways of thought and being. An absolute treasure of a book. And beautifully read by the author himself. Should be read by everyone!
