Summary

In a land torn between magic and alchemy, Sepha is an exceptional alchemist, able to bend the rules in ways no one else can. But when a slip of the tongue lands her in prison with a mountain of straw, even she has to admit that she can't transmute straw into gold. With the threat of a death sentence hanging over her, she's forced to make a deal with a conniving magician.

Sepha escapes with her life - but at a cost: she has one year to alchemically create a body for the magician, or else her firstborn child will be his. As Sepha's deadline approaches, she uncovers a deadly secret. How can she save her country when the body she owes the magician will be used to destroy it?

It was good

It was a good story but it reminded me too much of the story of Rumpelstiltskin. Would’ve liked it more if it was a fresh original story.

Great fast read! Need a little magic?

This was a great debut book. I love that it was a spin/re telling continuation of Rumplestiltskin. I needed a new series with magic in it. I have already recommended this to friends and my bookclub.

Nothing short of amazing!

It isn't very common to find a book or audiobook that you can enjoy all the way through - but the Lady Alchemist respects its audience enough to not waste our time with useless fluff or yawn-inducing plot twists. Pretty much every moment is significant, every detail is utilized later on, and the plot doesn't linger too long in one place. A fun read, I hope there's a sequel!

Great Story & Clearly Narrated

Samatha Vitale created a captivating adventure with many twists and turns that will keep the listener engaged. The narration was clear and gave wind to the tale responding the Rumplestiltskin story with a slightly different twist from the classic tale.

Enchanting twist on Rumplestiltskin

This novel starts out as a retelling of the Rumplestiltskin fable and quickly turns into its own fantasy world and system of magic. Samantha Vitale has a talent for beautiful prose, which I thought paired well with Hallie Ricardo’s enchanting voice. The plot and story are balanced between character development and action scenes. I very much enjoyed the character development of Sepha. We meet her as a terrified and abused young woman, who is also surprisingly resilient and defiant. She grows into herself and this part of the story is perfect for a YA fantasy novel. There are some plot holes or maybe weak points? But I am wondering if those will be addressed in a sequel perhaps? Overall, it’s a great first novel. I am hoping she’ll write a sequel!

Beware of losing sleep with this tale

Thought it might be a mildly amusing take on an old fairy tale. But then the story engulfed my imagination and I couldn't stop listening. Wonderful prose, interesting plot twists and very developed characters. I blame the author for a lost night's sleep, but still look forward to a sequel, please.
