Summary

Containers are revolutionizing the way we build, ship, and run our applications. But like all good things, they come with their own set of challenges. This is where Kubernetes enters the scene.

Kubernetes helps you deploy and manage containerized applications at scale. It also abstracts the many different underlying cloud platforms so that you don't need to care whether you're deploying on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or your own on-premises datacenter. With Kubernetes, you can develop your applications on your laptop, deploy to your chosen cloud platform, migrate to a different cloud platform, and even migrate to your private cloud at your on-premises datacenter.

This audio version of The Kubernetes Book starts from the beginning and covers everything you need to know to be proficient with Kubernetes. It even includes two sections dedicated to threat-modeling Kubernetes and real-world security.

You'll learn:

  • Kubernetes cluster architecture
  • How to build Kubernetes Clusters
  • How to deploy and manage applications on Kubernetes
  • How to secure Kubernetes
  • The meaning of terms like cloud-native, microservices, desired state, containerized, and more...

Finally a technical book for Audible

This book was reworded to add value as an Audible book. Not that I've listened to a lot of technical books from Audible...maybe 10 books. All of the other technical books I've listened to regurgitate word-for-word what the author wrote. It becomes pretty annoying when the narrator reads the hash of a container verbatim.

Nigel Poulton made this book a verbal learning tool. AND he definitely knows his subject matter.

The book was just deep enough to provide a newbie with pieces of the K8s technology to form a solid foundation to work from.

This is how you do it

This guy really figured out how to do a tech audiobook. I've listened to a ton of them. In fact, I listened to a different K8S audiobook--or started to--but I couldn't bear to listen to someone read a book that he actually had no understanding of. Nigel, on the other hand, literally wrote the book. And then he re-wrote it--taking into consideration how boring it would be to listen to pages and pages of someone reading code. There are a couple of time in this book where he reads YAML to you, but it is usually abridged because he is fully aware of what the listener is experiencing. This book is for people who need a good intro to Kubernetes. If you already have an understanding of K8S APIs, master roles, pods, deployments, persistent disks and the likes, then you are probably looking for a real book, not an audio book. If you've heard of all those things but you don't know exactly how they fit together then this is the book for you.

Great introduction

Great overview of Kubernetes! The author has been able to translate concepts into a digestible format which had made entering the new technology much easier.

Doesn't really work as an audiobook

Its just too technical, and too much YAML. The first chapter works well, as it stays to high-level topics, but much of the rest does not. There isn't that much YAML... but as soon as he starts reading any, my eyes glaze over, my thoughts wander, and a few minutes later I realize I missed the last few paragraphs.

Do technical books translate into Audible format?

Surprisingly yes! Well laid out and narrated. Great format for the daily drive to work.
