Summary
A murder that defies logic - and a killer on the loose.
England, 1176. Aelred Barling, esteemed clerk to the justices of King Henry II, is dispatched from the royal court with his young assistant, Hugo Stanton, to investigate a brutal murder in a village outside York.
The case appears straightforward. A suspect is under lock and key in the local prison, and the angry villagers are demanding swift justice. But when more bodies are discovered, certainty turns to doubt - and amid the chaos it becomes clear that nobody is above suspicion.
Facing growing unrest in the village and the fury of the lord of the manor, Stanton and Barling find themselves drawn into a mystery that defies logic, pursuing a killer who evades capture at every turn.

Very enjoyable
I picked this title as a bit of a lucky dip and I’m glad I did. A good novel to wind down with at the end of the day.

Good start to a series of historical murder tales
I have read these stories in book format and enjoyed them so pleased to listen to the audio version
Interesting story setting the scene for future adventures as the relationship develops between the two main characters with hints about past history and reasons for current attitudes to kings justice at the time

entry level storytelling
the narration was good, considering the writin
g, which was pretty basic. I kept going, to give it a chance, and it improved enough for me to persevere to the end, not really impressed with this story, it passed the time but I wouldn't bother reading any more by the author

Refreshingly different.
Yes, basically it’s a murder mystery, but set in the time it is and a reluctant duo makes it more interesting. Owing to its setting I found the story and characters very satisfying. Good narration makes this a definite 5*.
