About this listen
Once upon a time, a wondrous Kingdom flourished under the reign of its proud Fae king and his family. All was not as it seemed when poisonous schemes and utter betrayal led to the downfall of an empire.
Sixteen years have since passed, the lands now lay in ruin, and crime prevails despite the will of the Council. Their mission becomes clear: produce an heir and unite the Kingdom to restore its former glory.
So becomes Heir Academy, the ultimate trial of strength and perseverance to forge the Kingdom's savior. The strongest of all species converge on one place to claim a crown. My crown.
I don't care what I have to do or who I have to take down. The rightful heir walks among them, and I will do everything in my power to sit on my throne.
The Kingdom of Ruin is book one in a planned four-book why-choose romance series.

I don't actually know where to start with this review... so first off.... This book falls into the evilness of 'they pull her hair because they like her' type of behavior. Please don't make strong girls fall for this. :(
Trying to write this without it sounding like a rant is hard... so, sorry for the rant.
Tropes: Enemies to lovers, mean girls, whychoose (I'd like to say, why choose ANY of these guys?!? Girl, there are better options out there!), lost heir, academy romance, shifters, fae, wolves, vampires, fantasy.
The good: If you can turn off your brain, it is mostly fluff. There's an interesting world out there and lots of characters. The series shows a lot of promise and maybe all the unanswered WHYs will be answered in one of the next four books in the series? Willa does a pretty decent job with the sad book. The adult scenes with Kieran where he does Addi's voice make it sound like the male character is enjoying things by himself and pretending she's there with the slightly higher pitched voice... I couldn't stop laughing. Humor is good!
The bad: Childish writing, one dimension characters, adding in characters and tropes just to tick checkboxes of what a whychoose academy romance should include. There are plot holes everywhere and it breaks the feeling of the story. The author spends lot of time 'telling' us about people's behaviors rather than having them behave in such a manner and letting the listeners make their own conclusions. There are sections that sound like cliff notes for the author rather than an actual finished book.
Other thoughts:
She's super powerful, has lots of l33t skills, but has no knowledge about do basic things that just involve waving herbs around and chanting? Why won't whoever taught her all the powerful fighting skills and given her knives, have also gone over the basics? If she has so much knowledge and history... why does she have no idea who are historical supporters, who have been friends? How does she not know the power of gossip and how to work with differing factions?
While the description says "... the lands now lay in ruin, and crime prevails despite the will of the Council." Why would that convince a council to give up power to some sort of randomly chosen heir from an 'academy'?
Also, the pushing of 'fae are best' over everyone else to 'return them to their former (imagined) glory' and higher place in the kingdom hierarchy... really just feels a lot like an attempt to make the kingdom great again, without really caring about others (vampires, shifters, wolves - who aren't shifters?!? -, humans) who are attempting to find their own place in the new world order. Why would they want another fae ruler?
This whole book series has so much promise, but the obvious questions that need answering... are not answered in this book at least.... and I find that I don't care enough about the characters or the plot to continue listening.... sorry! Maybe this is a great audiobook for someone, but that someone is not me.
All the plot holes :(
