Summary

When the two strangers turn up at Rowena Cooper's isolated Colorado farmhouse, she knows instantly that it's the end of everything. For the two haunted and driven men, on the other hand, it's just another stop on a long and bloody journey. And they still have many miles to go and victims to sacrifice before their work is done.

For San Francisco homicide detective Valerie Hart, their trail of corpses - women abducted, tortured, and left with a seemingly random series of objects inside them - has brought her from obsession to the edge of physical and psychological destruction. And she's losing hope of making a breakthrough before that happens. But the slaughter at the Cooper farmhouse didn't quite go according to plan. There was a survivor - Rowena's 10-year-old daughter, Nell, who now holds the key to the killings. Injured, half frozen, terrified, Nell has only one place to go. And that place could be even more terrifying than what she's running from.

Absolutely brilliant! Scary as hell!!!!

A disturbing delve in to the mind of a serial killer. Best thriller I've read since Mo Hayder's 'The Treatment'. Fantastic narration too. 5 star audiobook!

Too much back story

This is a decent book, that is very well read and the story is pretty good. The big issue for me was the amount of back story each character had, or more to the point, the authors insistence that before any character did anything there was a 5 minute description of how they were feeling before they did it. I know this is important in books, but in this book it's overkill. Two hours into the book and almost nothing has really happened and by the end of the book I found myself shouting "I don't care how you feel" just get on with it. Some of you might love it, but ruined the book for me.

Very unsettling

I found this very disturbing and as such, wouldn't listen to it again.

I understand that the story involved murders, but to go into such graphic detail with them and in cases, the baddies' language, wasn't necessary. Maybe I'm going all Mary Whitehouse but it was a bit much.

Various, random people are being murdered and it's up to an alcoholic cop with issues to stop the three year old cases.

A one passed crude attempt at a thriller

I as someone who reads alotof thrillers I found this poor their was little empathy with the victim and thevillans of the piece were. Basically unoriginal ccrude characterisations plucked from a cheap TV movie the chase was inevitability voing to yield the prize and by then I had lost interest
A poor read I can't xee myself revisiting this author and as a reader I'm pretty loyal once I've found quality material

Haunting Story

Would you consider the audio edition of The Killing Lessons to be better than the print version?

I have never read the print editon so I do not know but I probably would not have read it if the only option was hard copy.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The lead character- she is a strong intelligent woman working in a tough working environment- she is not typically girly.

What three words best describe Christine Delaine’s performance?

Good, Varied, Chilling

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me feel tense and open to things I did not want to hear about

Any additional comments?

No

Mixed feeling

What did you like best about The Killing Lessons? What did you like least?

The serial killing premise was good and that part of the story I enjoyed. The detective part was like walking through treacle, too wordy, and as seems the norm these days the female character desperately in emotional turmoil......sigh

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Far to wordy, sometimes less is more, so many descriptions of feelings, the snow, the heat the air like reading a high school English paper

What didn’t you like about Christine Delaine’s performance?

Nothing. Her voice grated on me but the story held enough promise to continue

Was The Killing Lessons worth the listening time?

No
