Summary

A product of the latest technologies, Barliona is a virtual world brimming with fun and entertainment. The government has become the guarantor for the in-game currency, allowing its free circulation. As a result the population floods Barliona in pursuit of easy money.

It doesn't take long for the game developers to discover a source of free labor: real-world prison convicts. While their bodies are locked in special auto-maintenance virtual capsules, the prisoners' minds are released into Barliona's virtual mines.

Dmitry Mahan has been through it all. Sentenced to eight years' hard labor, he now struggles with an unpopular class - the Shaman - and an equally unpopular profession of a Jeweler. His fight for survival becomes anything but virtual.

Power leveling but in a good way

This is the second book in the series and whilst it could stand alone, you really need to read the first. Story grows well and the character remains believable (in a game context of course). Story develops well and the addition of other characters is good.

Just fantastic

In the interests of balance, I tried to come up with negatives. I completely failed.

Better than Ready Player One

Good continuation of the series. If you like Ready Player One, then read this as it is better. Top notch narrator as well.

book three please

Would you listen to The Kartoss Gambit again? Why?

if the other books were to come out soon i would definitely listen again and it probably be a highlight of the experience from my current vantage point, but in the end this is only part of a series of books so it must be viewed as part of the larger whole. with all that said i would certainly listen to this book again.

What did you like best about this story?

i love any story the can flesh out its world and give its internal politics just as much credence as the characters and this book does a good job at that, the rivalries of all the top guilds in Barleona make a great obstacle for Mahan to go up against when just trying to serve out his 8 years without hassle and makes for a very interesting listen

Great continuation

A perfect follow on from the last book, the way the characters are starting to really take on their personalities and become their own entity's is fantastic. Thank god there are so many books in this series.

Hoping this is setting up for a great adventure

I loved the 1st book, this second is really not as good. Its not bad but its not as rich a story and the ending is a little weak.

I have just downloaded book 3 in the hope that book 2 building on book 1 is laying down the springboard for a wonderful adventure.

A great sequel.

The first book in the series was my first LitRPG and I loved it. This was even better in my opinion, the overall story was laid out very well and there were so many aspects to it which I thoroughly enjoyed listening about, the way clans were set out, questing, levelling, empires and much more. Definitely worth the read.
