Summary

Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, veterans of many battles, return in this novel to the seas where they first sailed as shipmates. But Jack is now a senior captain, commanding a line-of-battle ship sent out to reinforce the squadron blockading Toulon, and this is a longer, harder, colder war than the dashing frigate action of his early days.... A sudden turn of events takes him and Stephen off on a hazardous mission to the Greek islands. All his old skills of seamanship - and luck when fighting against odds - come triumphantly into their own as the story concludes with some fierce and thrilling action.

Tedious

Hours of dialogue where nothing happens . The other books have had more pace , but this one seems to drag with long intellectual discussions which are enlightening as to the mindset of characters but means the book loses all momentum .

A classic in the series

This story carries a wonderful mix of the subtleties of Maturin craft, the psychological struggles within both men and finishes with one of the most swashbuckling raw battles. Perhaps my favourite of the series.

Great

This might have been my favourite in the series so far. It shows great skill that with so many volumes already completed O'Brien can still come out with something new.

Great narration as always

A most intelligent summary of the age at sea.

Although a rip roaring tale in its own right the story goes so much deeper into the human condition. Love, friendship, the Royal Navy of that age, all mingle with superb description and an excellent technical knowledge of the subject to produce an emersive experience on which to dwell for a few hours.

Magnificent, superb.

What a writer Patrick O’Brian was, his period nautical knowledge utterly convincing - I have no idea how accurate it is, I haven’t a clue, but no matter. The story is wonder of excitement and Ric Jerrom does it proud, (it’s a wonder that he survived the last battle without having a seizure!)

A ripping yarn

Another page turning story, wonderfully read by narrator Ric Jerrom. I enjoyed the sprinkling of humor throughout the book which had me in fits of laughter.

Victory!

Another solid excellent piece, we find Jack in highs and lows but ultimately back into his truest vein in brilliant seamanship and tactics.

Dullest entry in the series so far

As always love Ric Jerroms narration. Unfortunately Jacks frustration and boredom of a french blockade and political side quests is felt in the writing. Even a great finale was not quite enough to surpass my overall struggle with this one. still love the series though and look forward to the next one.

Historically informative and exciting to read

Well orated and particularly in the battle scenes, my fifth reading/listening round. Excellent. The passages at sea are my most favoured.
