About this listen

It was an invite to die for…

When the anonymous invite arrived, we knew exactly who it was from.

Elle Romero, the beautiful, charismatic Texan who burst into our lives when we were teenagers.

We'd gone our separate ways and lost touch. Until now.

Elle, the legendary prankster, is back.

She's invited us all—me, Claire, Lizzie and Megan—to a swanky country house for a reunion.

We arrive excited for a weekend of reminiscing and reconnecting. A chance to step out of our uneventful lives for a while.

But when Elle fails to show up at her own party, we begin to wonder if she's up to her old tricks.

And when a body turns up in the cellar, it seems this time the joke might just be on us…

The Invite is the twisty, addictive new thriller by A J McDine, author of No One I Knew.

The book started off well, even though the 4 friends involved seemed quite unfriendly to each other, so you have a rough idea that all isn't going to be roses. However as the book progressed, I found myself suspending disbelief on many occasions. A woman who has epilepsy & forgets her meds (& who can't drink alcohol), then proceeds to drink alcohol, the U.S friend who organised the weekend away appears to be playing nasty tricks....so the friends decide to stay (?!), they find a corpse & even though there are no Internet signals, don't collectively walk for help. That's many hours wasted that I'm never going to get back. Sadly I wouldn't recommend

This story keeps you on edge as all the characters lives and secrets are revealed. The twist in the end great. Well worth a read!

Great twists and turns.

Dont worry, no spoilers!
I found the story itself to be a fairly good one, and there is certainly satisfaction to be had near the end.

The writing and narration didn't really work together in places. For example an American accent when talking about an American character in the third person. It simply doesn't work for me.
I don't mind introducing accents, it just always feels disjointed, and jarring, if it isn't first person perspective or simply for the character's speech.

Overall it was middle of the road, good enough to keep listening but not edge of your seat gripping. It was a perfectly reasonable Sunday listen for me.

Good story. Wasn't my favourite narration.

Starts out as possible chick lit but really develops into a good story. Recommend it and easy listen too

Great clever story
