Summary

The first volume of Wodehouse's brilliant complete and unabridged short stories. Originally a semi-novel, this version contains self-contained stories which are nonetheless linked, often by Bingo Little, an endearingly hopeless chap and a serial romancer.

Jeeves Exerts The Old Cerebellum (18'11")
No Wedding Bells For Bingo (16'49")
Aunt Agatha Speaks Her Mind (14'56")
Pearls Mean Tears (24'28")
The Pride Of The Woosters Is Wounded (16'30")
The Hero's Reward (13'38")
Introducing Claude And Eustace (11'13")
Sir Roderick Comes To Lunch (18'10")
A Letter Of Introduction (19'12")
Startling Dressiness Of A Lift Attendant (21'54")
Comrade Bingo (21'44")
Bingo has a Bad Goodwood (18'03")

Have to Pay Twice - Do Not Waste Money

I initially gave this four stars overall (five for performance) but I've now changed them all to one because I didn't realise this was just part one of two, despite being one book.

A few days ago I finished this audiobook, and as it was labelled The Inimitable Jeeves (no mention of it being Part 1 of 2 in the title) I assumed I had finished the full book, so moved onto the next title listed in the chronology I found online. I've read the series many times before but often out of order, so when Bertie mentioned in the next book that [spoiler] had married [spoiler] when the last I'd heard they'd never met, I assumed there was some reason Bertie was mentioning it in passing and that Wodehouse didn't publish the story until later. I'd been sure to check the order they were published so I could have the full experience, as I'd been having a stressful time and wanted to relax and not have to think or try to remember anything. But by the time I was mid-way through The Code of the Woosters it was niggling me that I felt I'd missed a major storyline, so I searched the order of the individual stories rather than just books and saw that several of them were missing from my copy of The Inimitable Jeeves!

It was only then that I searched the book again on Audible and saw that this book was split into two files which you had to pay for separately! I already resent using money-hungry and exploitative Amazon but since I've used Audible for so long and it's hard to find a good replacement especially for Android, I keep using it, but I'm so angry that there are more layers of money-grabbing dishonesty to this company. I suppose I should blame the individual publisher or whoever is specifically in charge of this but you know, I barely had the energy for this in the first place.

I know this is a long review for something that needed only a few words and I'm not even talking about the actual content, but I think it's a bit thick that we're expected to shell out twice for an already relatively short book, and on top of that being tricked into it. (On the subj. of the content, I gave it four rather than five stars mostly due to the Comrade Bingo story. Obviously I'm not coming to Wodehouse - certainly not Wooster - for great working-class rep or modern leftist values, and everyone in the series is an over-the-top satirical caricature anyway, but the fact that the comrades had no redeeming features at all and were shown only to be disgusting and murderous when even fascists like Spode have a hidden heart was rather disappointing. Women are generally portrayed badly but then, so is everyone else, and they usually still have a heart if they're upper class, and I know all this is from Bertie's perspective, but Wodehouse doesn't even give us a hint of anything beneath the surface for the commie scum when he often points to Bertie's ignorance in other areas. Maybe I'm missing something as I've made clear I am wont to do, but I just thought I'd add this since I'm already springing an essay on the reviews section.)

I love these stories and they always bring me such joy, so turning to them in a stressful time has helped me so much, but having this background anxiety for the last couple of books, thinking maybe I'd missed something or got something wrong, then having to pay for the second part when I don't have much money to spend has heaped stress back on when stress was what I was using these books to cope with!

tldr: Get a different version. I love Martin Jarvis's narration but Jonathan Cecil is just as good even if the audio on his recording for The Inimitable Jeeves is apparently sub-par. I think there are other options and I want to save others the stress/£££

Wodehouse and Jarvis. Heaven.

"Jeeves?"
"Sir?"
"If a chap was to pick a narrator for his life, which chap would one pick to give it the old je nais se whatsit? Who'd be the bee's rollerskates?"
"Jarvis, sir. Martin Jarvis."
'Nuff said!

When you think you can't love Wodehouse more Mr Jarvis comes along and proves heaven on Earth is truly possible if only you stay clear of indomitable aunts and potential fiancees.

Peeerfection!

Superb

I was already a fan of Martin Jarvis’ rendering of the Blandings Castle stories, but I was really impressed by the way he brought these Jeeves stories to life. Wonderfully performed, wonderfully paced, and wonderfully adapted. Time well spent.

Delightfully light

Witty and charming light entertainment perfectly read by Martin Jarvis. His Jeeves did sound remarkably like Stephen Fry at times but I'm not sure how else you could voice it. A charming treat.

Sublime comedy

Beautifully read by Martin Jarvis, these Jeeves and Wooster tales are masterfully constructed, featuring an array of unforgettable characters (including Aunt Agatha, compared by Bertie to a ‘human vampire bat’). The only problem is this isn’t long enough! It would be good to have an omnibus audiobook containing all of the J&W stories, though this may be unwieldy. But Jarvis’ narration is a perfect fit and the stories themselves are timeless.

Genius

A collection of great short stories; Jeeves quietly triumphs on behalf of Bertie Wooster and his hapless friends. This contains some gems and I think ‘comrade Bingo’ might just be one of the funniest things ever written.

The Inimitable Jeeves

PG Wodehouse has created a cast of characters who will live on in our memories, for many years. so well read by Martin Jarvis, who is Bertie Wooster in disguise.

Amazing!

Martin Jarvis, you absolute legend! Wish you could narrate all the Jeeves and Wooster adventures!
This book is so hilarious that it got me laughing out nearly for the entire duration. I'm glad I work alone or else people might have thought me mad.
