Katie Price is baffled when a man claiming to be her grandfather leaves her his entire estate in the Scottish Highlands. The bulk of the estate consists of a thriving whisky distillery and a moldering castle, where the eccentric old man actually lived until his death. The will stipulates that Katie must travel to Scotland and claim her inheritance in person.

As Katie’s stay extends from weeks into months, she uncovers the secret that led to her mother’s birth, and begins to unravel a 250-year-old mystery surrounding the beautiful young wife of the last laird of Clan McBride. According to local lore, Isobel McBride vanished from the castle without a trace shortly after the Battle of Culloden, and some believe that her ghost still walks the battlements at night. A strange dream in Isobel’s tower room leads Katie to Isobel’s hiding place, where she discovers love letters from a man other than Isobel’s husband, his initials being the only clue to his identity.

As Katie begins to unearth the clues to Isobel’s fate, she embarks on a romantic journey of her own and finds a new life she never expected.

Imagine you receive a phone call one day that you have inherited a Scottish castle and distillery. What would you do? Check it out of course. Then when you find hidden love letters hidden in the stonewall of the bedroom of the lady of the castle you want to know what happened to the love birds. And when you do all this with the help of the handsome Scottish lawyer maybe pick up some love yourself? Loved the story and narrated well. Just like all other stories written by Irina Shapiro it sucks you in until you're done with it.

The story was mediocre and the attempt at a Scottish accent was pitiful. Accents really should not be attempted unless you can do them.

Terrible Scottish accent

I was looking forward to this listen,but as soon as I heard the "Scottish"accent I had to leave the rest of the story unheard. Why do authors allow their writing to be destroyed by the narrators dreadful interpretation of an accent ?

When someone records the narration for a book shouldn’t it go through various checks and balances?? How did anyone let this book get published by a narrator who had no idea what a Scottish accent sounds like? Hideous.

Shame as it’s another great book from this author but I wish she would employ a British narrator.

What did you like most about The Inheritance?

I knew I would like this book, as I have read a few of this author's novels. However I had not read this one. I like to listen on audible to relax and found this a quite relaxing story. It kept me interested and wanting to know what was coming next. We often anticipate the ending to a story but for me it is not about the end, it is about how we get there!

What did you like best about this story?

I liked " The Inheritance " partly because it was set in Scotland a place I love. I did wonder how this inheritance would turn out, but very well in the end. The story was well thought out, with well drawn likeable characters. Sorry to say goodbye to them!

Have you listened to any of Charity Spencer’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This is the first performance of Charity Spencer I have listened too. it took a chapter or 2 to get with her reading, but she did it very well I thought.
