Summary

A new approach to investing based on how Wall Street insiders approach the market

The Indomitable Investor deconstructs the stock market as the public has come to know it and reconstitutes it from the inside out from the perspective of the fortunate few who dominate Wall Street. By revealing how top investors and traders think and act Steven Sears shows the stock market to be an undulating ocean of money, with seasoned investors reading the waves others cannot.

Teaching listeners to think about the market in radically different ways, The Indomitable Investor shows how to improve returns - and, just as importantly, avoid losses - with disciplines deployed by people who almost always do exactly the opposite of what Wall Street says to do.

Laying bare great fallacies, the book explains that non-professional investors wrongly think the stock market is a place to make money, which is what Wall Street wants them to try to do. The Indomitable Investor says otherwise and shows how Wall Street's best investors have a completely different focus.

  • Explains the critical ideas and insights of top traders and investors in language anyone can understand and implement
  • Packed with material rarely shared off Wall Street that is used every day by professional investors
  • Introduces the 17 most important words on Wall Street
  • Teaches critical skills, including: How to increase returns by focusing on risk, not potential profits; how to use the stock market's historical patterns to optimize investment decisions; understanding key relationships between stocks and the economy that predict what will happen to stocks and the broader market; how to increase mutual fund returns with an easy adjustment that redirects the bulk of profits to you - not mutual fund companies, and how to analyze information like seasoned investors to move beyond "statement of the obvious" news reports that turn ordinary investors into Dumb Money

Accessible to readers of all backgrounds, including those with a limited understanding of investing, The Indomitable Investor will change how investors view the stock market, Wall Street, and themselves.

Information overload.

A good read to make you think long and hard about buying that "hot-tip" you just heard from a friend of a friend.

This is a book that assumes you're only interested in going long equitites for the long term, nevertheless, the sheer volume of advcie that is thrown at you in this book is somewhat overwhelming, and leaves you feeling that the idea of choosing your own stocks in a minefield - which at least made a refreshing change from all the books that try to tell people it's easy.

If you're familiar with this field, they'll be quite a lot here that you've probably heard before: but they'll also probably be something new and interesting to you. I found it rewarding even though long equities is not usually my style

I particularly like how it bangs home the message that the financial industry and the financial media are not princiaplly concerned with your propsperity. I don't think this can be said too often.

Narrator is fine. Although someone forgot to edit out a couple of short repetitions.

Geared to fairly inexperienced, naive investors

An articulated investment system is not provided. Provides a decent overview of the markets and many of the difficulties both external and internal which impede successful investing. This can be helpful for context. Struggles with more nuanced topics and concepts. For instance, the advice given is to sell losing stocks before losses mount but don't panic sell at market bottoms. This may be a bit confusing for some investors to interpret and understand. There seemed to be an implied assumption that individual investors could potentially time the stock market cycle which obviously is extremely difficult for even dedicated pros.
I think individual investors might find a lot more practical investment help (in fact they are all you will need to transform your investing) in the following books:
Hedge Fund Market Wizards, Stock Market Wizards both by Jack Schwager. Unconventional Success: a fundamental approach to personal investment by David Swenson. The Ultimate Dividend Playbook by Josh Peters.

An indispensible tool for the investor

This book is a great listen. It answers most of my questions about the stock market and stock trading. I had to listen to it many times to absorb the abundant tips and wisdom. Narrator's voice and reading pace is flawless. Highly recommended.

I was totally captivated!

If you could sum up The Indomitable Investor: Why a Few Succeed in the Stock Market When Everyone Else Fails in three words, what would they be?

This is "this is out-of-the-box thinking that is so rare in today's thinking. I have traded options for 25 years, and it comes down to a contrarian way of thinking, as well as overall common sense. He has really done his homework, and it takes a lot for me to "turn the wheel," …But, I found his thinking to be in total sync with my own, albeit humbling to absorb the vast amount of information. I found myself hitting the back button a lot, way more than usual!

What other book might you compare The Indomitable Investor: Why a Few Succeed in the Stock Market When Everyone Else Fails to and why?

Bernie Shaeffers is equally as good, but less up to date

Have you listened to any of Jeremy Gage’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I will get more!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Not applicable

Any additional comments?

Clearly worth the time and money, after all time is money!
