Oxford, 1883. Young men are being found bound, gagged, and hooded at the gates of their colleges in the small hours.

Basil Rice, Jesus College fellow, is asked by the senior proctor to investigate. But investigating matters of sexual purity is dangerous, as it lays Basil open to unwelcome scrutiny of his own private life.

Alis Hawkins consistently produces really enjoyable novels that successfully balance historical detail with interesting plots and character development, and the latest novel is no different.
This one focuses on the injustices and power imbalances faced by women at the time, with the 'boys will be boys' attitude meaning women were held responsible for upholding their own purity as well as that of the men around them. It was esp interesting to hear about the real life case which the plot was inspired by
We also got the opportunity to further explore the choices faced by Non and Basil, with the former having to choose between her own career advancement and the best decisions for others around her, whilst the latter is faced with his old flame returning to tempt him now his wife has died.
The two audiobook narrators did a great job as usual at bringing the characters to life.
Overall a thoroughly enjoyable listen!

Non and Basil develop and enthrall, they draw the reader into their time and world. The plot moves apace Alis manages both historical and current issues with informed opinions and well researched fact. i enjoy this series so much and await the next Oxford investigation impatiently
