Summary

The Hunter from the Woods marks the much-anticipated return of Michael Gallatin, the lycanthropic hero of Robert McCammon’s 1989 classic, The Wolf’s Hour. These all-new, interlinked stories offer a full measure of McCammon’s trademark narrative excitement, and comprise a fascinating composite portrait of a unique fictional creation.

The volume opens with a pair of brief glimpses into Michael’s early life in Russia and his initial recruitment into the British Secret Service. It ends with a haunting vision of the werewolf at twilight. In between, McCammon gives us three stellar novellas depicting different phases of Michael’s long, brutal war against Nazi Germany. "Sea Chase" is a nautical tale about the hazards of transporting a defecting German scientist to a place of sanctuary in England. "The Wolf and the Eagle" is the account of an unlikely friendship between rival "men of action" and a harrowing portrayal of a lethal forced march through the North African desert. "The Room at the Bottom of the Stairs" tells of an impossible, ultimately tragic love affair set in the embattled city of Berlin during the latter stages of the war.

Erotic, visceral, and filled with moments of desolating horror and unexpected warmth, The Hunter from the Woods is a triumph of imaginative storytelling. Like the best of McCammon’s earlier work, it offers intelligent, world-class entertainment. In the process, it shines a welcome new light on one of the most uncommon heroes in contemporary fiction.

Magnificent...

This story reminded me of The Pianist from another perspective...truly heart rending for a man who found and then lost the absolute love of his life - for anyone who has been lucky enough to feel the same love for another person, it's a magnificently told tale that resonates to the core..

Great Short Stories

We learn more of Michael's life through tales at sea, in the desert and back at his adopted home, Wales.

The trip at sea was probably the best, having just watched "Black Sea", you could really appreciate how cramped, dangerous and tense everything was.

Tooth and Fangs.

With great joy I listened to this story, the story I started over 30yrs ago. This has to be one of the greatest horror, thriller, and just a tad bit of love story book I’ve ever read. I just wish there was more now.

Good but not quite as good as the first

As per the title. It was still an enjoyable story but I suppose once you've heard one story about a werewolf/spy you're slightly less impressed by a second. Still, I would recommend it if you enjoyed the first as much as I did.

Another top story

McCammon is a master story teller. There is a literary depth to his writing which makes his fantasies stand out. I am two books into his Matthew Corbett series and loving them too. Simon Prebble narrates perfectly.

Mid 20th C. Werewolf Spy

Listen, here is an imaginative & interesting approach to the genre. The 3* rating doesn't mean it a mediocre; it just means things would've been done better. The book is written in such a way as to sell the movie rights.

Although, McCammon is a very competent writer, he’s not great and perhaps to make this type of book more profound & memorable, it needs slightly more talent, as, let’s face it, it is a rather tricky subject.

Simon Prebble’s narration is old school, educated, enunciated, clean, intelligent and with a class English accent.

Can't wait for the next instalment!!!!!!!!!!

Very good
some excellent insight into Michael, and the last 25 minutes were epic terrible and cruel to the reader.
A master class in leaving it hanging.
