In the far reaches of Imperial space, a ferocious warp storm approaches an Administratum world, cutting off the entire planet from the rest of the Imperium. As their towering grey spires are punished by endless rain, countless administrators, tithe-masters, and book-keepers are forced to evacuate. Story
Exalting war and art in harmony, the warrior-artisans of the Angels Resplendent have forged a radiant haven amidst a blighted galaxy. But an ancient sin stains their honour – a wound in their world that will never heal. Ignorant souls would call it a forest, but those who watch over it know better. Nothing natural grows in the Reverie’s snow-swept glades or wanders amongst the unnatural things that do, save for the intruders who trespass on its pain. Some seek revelation or redemption, others dream of winning a place amongst the Resplendent, but all come because they must.

Morgravia Sanctus is being hunted. Something terrible has happened to her, a profound trauma that has left behind ‘red dreams’ and a physical agony that can strike at any moment. Her life in danger and her memory fragmented, she arrives in the low-hive of Blackgheist to escape her pursuers and search for ‘the Broker’ – a trafficker in memories and psychic mind manipulation. Soon after, a plague sweeps the city, turning its citizens into blood-hungry monsters. Order collapses, death and slaughter are rampant.

In the midst of a vast gas nebula lies a remote watch-station, hanging silently against a tapestry of dying stars. It sits alone, patiently awaiting lost travellers adrift in the freezing vastness of the void. To such souls it appears as a blessing, a safe haven from the warp storms that wrack the immaterium and destroy the ships of those foolish enough to test the tides. Summary
A Warhammer Horror novel.
An Astra Militarum colonel, broken by war and loss, returns to his childhood home to take up the mantle of Planetary Governor - but horrors await in the House of Malveil that will make his experiences of war seem like child's play....
Listen to it because: Haunted house stories are a staple of the horror genre. In a grim, dark future where much worse things than ghosts can anchor themselves to reality, a haunted house can do more than just scare you…
The story: In a bleak corner of the city of Valgaast, the House of Malveil awaits. A place of darkness, its halls throb with a sinister history. Its rooms are filled with malice. Its walls echo with pain. Now it stirs eagerly with the approach of an old heir - Colonel Maeson Strock of the Astra Militarum has returned home to his ancestral mansion. He is a man broken, both by the horrors of war and by personal loss, and he has come home to take up the mantle of Planetary Governor. He hopes he can purge his home world of political corruption and reforge connections with his estranged children. He hopes he can rebuild his life.
Malveil will feast on these dreams. Strock believes he has seen the worst of the galaxy’s horrors. Malveil will show him how wrong he is.

40k universe made scary!
TLDR: haunted house story in 40k universe has good narration, good atmosphere, lots of haunted house tropes and strong writing to carry it all. Up front: 1) it's a haunted house story with lots of the regular features and tropes. 2) it's a 40k story so no prizes for guessing which evil forces are involved 3) it's still a haunted house story so the 40k theme is slightly pasted on and could easily be swapped out for any time, place or fictional universe. All this said, I really enjoyed it. Some reviews have criticised the range or overlap of accents and lack of a female co-narrator - the delivery is actually very good, with lots of emotion at the right times and the lack of a female voice wasnt a distractionat all. The writing is solid and consistent, the plot is good and even if it's not wholly original just remember that haunted house gonna do what haunted house gonna do, so settle in for the ride and enjoy it for what it is.

Great horror story
David Annandale brings a Lovecraftian vibe to the 40k universe with his tale of a descent into madness brought about by the machinations of a daemonic house. Brilliantly narrated by Dugald Bruce-Lockhart who manages to capture the essence of each character perfectly.

Can I give 6 stars?
When I write reviews, I try to give an impression of how the book affected me, or what notable perspectives the book provides. I don't know if I should be more harsh in future, even if I genuinely enjoy the book. This one plays the gradual build up of mystery and horror very well. I had the chill multiple times. It's written so well and the narrator does a brilliant job. I've given a good couple of 5 star reviews, so I don't know how I can make this work stand out even more. I'm very happy to have completed this as Halloween approaches.

A turn of a screw too far.
Though well read and performed, the story was confusing (maybe a tad boring) , not really 40k flavoured and Henry James did it better I feel - slight spoiler there. I doff my cap to Mr Bruce-Lockart for his energetic performances though. Not a bad read but if you want to delve into the Imperium these are not the haunted, forsaken doors i would walk through to get there.

The house of boredom and repitition.
A struggle from the get-go, by the end of the story it feels like putting an animal out of its misery when the listener is finally finished hearing how terrible the house is. A plot entirely predictable from the first few chapters, The main storyline is littered with characters who ultimately have no suitable end, and just sort of breeze out of your life as casually as they entered, having brought nothing to the plot. The main villain is a bad person, but never gets dealt with, so irrespective of the main story one's left with a bitter taste in the mouth as they get away essentially scot-free. The main character is completely unrelatable which is probably why the horror effect doesn't really set in. Some of his actions are just frankly For a "warhammer *horror* " title, this is quite substandard, you'd be better grabbing "The Wicked and the Damned" for an actually enjoyable if equally predictable listen/read.

Too long
I enjoyed this but, at times, it was like wading through treacle. These sorts of stories should be audiodrama rather than audiobook, with multiple actors playing the multiple parts. Having the same person (sometimes badly) doing different accents for different characters is sometimes jarring and laughable and cringe-inducing and great all at the same time. Have females playing the female parts and males playing the male parts-even two actors would be able to do it, but having a man trying to portray a female's voice then suddenly cut to a male's voice then a different male's voice with a different accent then a different female with a different accent from any of the previous voices is very distracting. The story itself drags on way too long and could very easily have been a short story or even novella. The characterization is excellent, though, and the slip into insanity is well written, though the ending is telegraphed long before it arrives-a bit like an episode of the 70s TV show Tales Of The Patently Obvious. Overall it was good, but it would have been better with multiple voice actors, and shorter.

what a ghost would be in 40k
Definitely a good mix of classic horror and the grimness of 40k. It seems predictable in the middle but make sure you keep going. you won't see the end coming. It does a great job of describing what a touch of chaos will to ordinary men.

Disappointing, lost potential
I do realize this book was labeled as "Warhammer Horror", however I think there was the potential for a better political thriller set in the war-hammer universe that was never realized. I was drawn into the initial plot of a soldier who inherits the Governorship of his home planet and has to return home to root out corruption. The world is no longer sending its supplies to the empire because greedy local oligarchs are diverting the industrial output to the black market for personal profit. The main character is tasked with restoring his planet's production output or risk having his throne seized by Imperial authorities. The effort to restore honesty to the planet's industry is opposed by a powerful councilor and her other political allies. The governor must press forward with his plan to end the black market while facing assassination attempts on himself and his supporters. Unfortunately the horror element had to rear its ugly head and abort the promising early plot. The governors mansion is haunted because of past dark family secret. While the political machinations were interesting, the "haunted house" was tedious and dull. It works on the main character through a series of mind-altering dream sequences. I hate dream sequences in books! Although I finished the book, I barely payed attention while listening to the ending. I wasn't particularly willing to try to figure out if what was happening was real (in the context of the book) or another part of a dream sequence.

Decent
So the story was decent, a good horror narrative. Yet the narrator was not the typical Black Library standard. He mispronounced crucial things, lacked emphasis on important parts, and generally I had to work to pay attention to the story as it tended to meld together into background noise at the slightest distraction. Disappointing considering the importance of subject as it helps us understand what happens on some of the million worlds of the Imperium.

Excellent addition to the collection
This was one of the first true Warhammer Horror books that GW has produced that was not a rehash of some older authors work “I.e. sad copy of masque of the red death renamed” a re-release of some 80s novel (those were good, but hardly original) or did not just come out and say what the horrific creature (or chaos god) was involved. This actually captured the fear of the unknown, even at the end you are questioning what was going on and what was the outcome. Excellent read.

To predictable
I dont usually read horror, as I generally dont gele well with horror media in general, so im no expert, but the story in this book is to predictable for my tastes. Except for 1 or 2 small twists i could almost see where the story was going the whole time. I guess there is a sense of cosmic horror in that "no matter what you do, the end will be the same" kinda thing, and the base story is entertaining, but ultimately forgettable

A surprisingly strong horror story
The tone of this book, like several people have mentioned does come off like The Haunting of Hill House, but it really nails a creepy atmosphere and a strong story. The protagonists loss of reality twists how the story comes off, and it leaves the listener questioning what really happens until the end! A great listen.

Great story; bad performance
This is a great story, but I’m just not a fan of the narrator. He does a decent job for the main character, but every other character was awfully done.
