Summary

I live next to a haunted house.

I began to suspect something was wrong with the gothic building when its family fled in the middle of the night, the children screaming, the mother crying. They never came back to pack up their furniture.

No family stays long. Animals avoid the place. Once, I thought I saw a woman's silhouette pacing through the upstairs room...but that seems impossible; no one was living there at the time.

A new occupant, Anna, has just moved in. I paid her a visit to warn her about the building. I didn't expect us to become friends, but we did. And now that Marwick House is waking up, she's asked me to stay with her.

I never intended to become involved with the building or its vengeful, dead inhabitant. But now I have to save Anna...before it's too late for the both of us.

Spooky stories

Love Darcy Coates’ ghost stories! They are perfect to listen to while I’m busy at home. I’m slowly working my way through as many titles as I can read and listen too. Keep them coming please, they are so wonderful and I just can’t get enough.

formulaic

I had just finished carrow hall and returned it because of the dreadful narration.
I had already purchased this book so I hoped the narration would be better, it was, but the story was identical to the last.
if it wasnt for the reader I would not have been able to distinguish one book from the other!. Another goes back!!!.

Boring and without atmosphere

Found it very dull and lacking in imaginative spark.Did not like the characters and felt they were all shallowly drawn, especially the ghost.

Enjoyable and modern. it has a particular plot mechanic that is always disturbing when done well.

Better watch out if the ghost wants you.

My spine tingled as I listened to this story. It's scary to think about the possibility of a ghost controlling your mind, yet that is exactly what happens in this story. Imagine having no control over your actions with a ghost at the helm. Not only does Anna lose it, the entire neighborhood is taken hostage. Darcy Coates writes fantastic ghost stories that are spellbinding to the last word. There are, of course, ghosts, a wee bit of romance, and a lot of spooky happenings. Oh, and the characters are scary. You won't be sorry you listened.

Beginning was strong....ending, not so much

(NOT SCARY......AT ALL!!! MILDLY CREEPY AT BEST) It started off pretty good, moved along nicely, but it went south really quickly after chapter 23. It just seemed like the author either gave up or didn't know where to take the story. By the end of the book I just wanted it to be over. I didn't even care what happened to the characters.

Not a fan

I really didn't like this narrator. The narrator's voice inflection was that of a robot and was so irritating that it was very hard to finish the book. I think the book would have been way more fun to listen to if someone else had narrated and put some passion into the words.

Another creepy book by Darcy Coates

Darcy Coates has done a very creepy job with this book. I have read/listened to a few of her books and love them all so far. I love how she mainly does Haunted House books. Ghosts are my favorite. The book is Narrated by Emily Sutton-Smith. I really enjoyed her rendition of the book. She fully kept my attention all the way through the book. She has also done a great job with her character voices.

In this book Jo lives next door to a haunted house. The family living in the house flee's during the night with nothing but the Pj's they are wearing. They don't even bother to come back an collect their belonging.

Eight months later Jo gets a new neighbor. Anna is about Jo's age and seems like a very nice person. Jo and Anna become fast friends. Jo finally gets her chance to tour the house known as the Marwick House. She almost immediately knows it is haunted.

When Anna's abusive husband shows up at Jo's, she lies and tells him she doesn't know anyone by the name of Anna. As soon as he leaves she runs to let Anna know. She decides to spend the night at Anna's and this is where things really gets creepy.

Too short, not that scary, not enough back story

When I started this book, I was hoping for a "woman in black" kind of story, scary , deaths, lots of back story, a restless ghost, a speechless ending and frightening feeling at the end. It's far from that.

This book is a little scary, fast phased, entertaining, with some little love, but it is too short lacks back story and it could be a little more scary.

About the performance, she is a little robitic and emotionless at times.

keeps you guessing what will happen next

good plot, good story. kept you listening for what would happen next. I wasn't sure if Anna's boyfriend being buried for real or Helen's allusion until the very end
