Summary

Carrot has moved into the Wonder Museum—an eclectic collection of taxidermy, shrunken heads, and Mystery Junk owned by her Uncle Earl. For Carrot, it's not creepy at all: she grew up with it. What's creepy is the corridor behind one of the museum walls. There's just no space for a corridor there—or the concrete bunker, or the strange islands beyond the bunker’s doors, or the unseen things in the willow trees.

Carrot has stumbled into a horrifying world, and They are watching her. Strewn among the islands are the remains of Their meals—and Their experiments. And even if she manages to make it home, she can't stop calling Them after her…

Creepy in places but disappointing overall

I got this because I loved Nettle and Bone, but this feels a lot more amateurish. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was author’s first novel. The main character mentions fan fiction a lot and that’s kind of what this feels like, someone trying to make the leap into original fiction (I don’t mean to diss fan fiction by the way, I’ve written the odd piece or two myself). I’ve read this criticism of another of Kingfisher’s books, that it could have been atmospheric and creepy but falls short, and I agreed at the time and think the same point could be made about this. The narrative voice is trying too hard to be snarky and funny and that detracts a lot from what could be a decent horror novel. There was also, as another reviewer said, too much filler, not enough focus on the other world, and the solution was a bit too easy and unsatisfying. Overall, this feels like it was written when the author was very inexperienced and just doesn’t really deliver.

It’s Fine

There is an interesting story in this but I feel it’s bogged down but so much filler and side stories that have very little impact other than some possibly character points. When the story gets going it’s good however.
Narration was slow but easy to listen to when sped up.

fun and weird

I was hoping for a more in depth look to this other place and potential link to their other work but found a fun and mysterious self contained horror with unique themes.

A little boring

It was pretty dull, maybe because not a lot actually happens. Not a bad performance, but some of the narration was a little itritaing
