Summary

When everyone on the planet suddenly freezes in place a single artificial intelligence threatens the survival of humanity.

From bestselling author R. R. Haywood comes a heart-pounding sci-fi adventure about a group of survivors fighting to take down the all-powerful DELIO - the world’s first fully sentient AI.

When a mysterious event leaves nearly every human being on the planet frozen and unaware, a desperate few will do whatever it takes to prevent the AI from controlling the fate of humanity.

In New York, one of DELIO’s creators joins forces with a washed-up suicidal detective and a young film maker with a dark past, while in London convicted drug dealer Alfie is saved by an abused young woman trafficked into London – together, only they can stop DELIO.

But can they do it before it’s too late?

This book contains adult language and graphic scenes which some listeners may find distressing.

Fantastic Narrators doing their best with material

OK just to say I have read several rr Haywards books in the past and listened to the audio books as well so I should have known better. The characters, such as they are, could be replaced by cardboard cutouts. The story, which I won't give away, expects you to suspend disbelief way beyond that which I am prepared to do. Just to say this is approx 13hrs of listening that in most authors hands would have be 2-3 opening chapters. The reason for this, hours of inane padding and repetition. You've told me once what the characters motivation is, I get it. It isn't necessary to repeat each characters motivation every bleeding chapter or each time they appear. Without that I think you'd get this book down to 6hrs which is still 4 hrs too long.
Now to the Narrators - utterly fantastic job. I'd happily listen to any of them narrating better books in the future

The wait is over

Having originally thought I would have to wait months for this new RR Haywood book on Audible I was overjoyed to see it available… pause current book download and press play . As thought and expected… what a story I have no idea what was cutout as it is abridged … when I have the time to sit and read I will get a proper book version but the story is fantastic the characters have you hooked and actually care about them … they annoy you make you laugh make you feel for their plight, roll on book 2

As per usual Rich has done a fantastic job

Fantastic

RR Hayward is my favourite author. I just love his writing and this book lived up to my expectations. Great characters and an amazing story. The narrators are first rate, unbelievably good. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Potential, but not very good

The story has a good basis, but the execution falls flat. The performance isn't as good as it could have been as well.

Starting with the story, it's compelling and interesting, but very predictable. A lot of unnecessary details and repetitions make it feel like a 3-4 hour story has been stretched to make it 12 hours.

Sometimes repeating something can give it more meaning and more power, however if it's overdone, it loses its power and becomes annoying. The author is camped out way in annoying country bordering on unbearable.

Because the story falls a bit flat a lot of dark gritty shocking stuff is added and the author often lingers on them. Nothing wrong with being a bit dark, but in this story it often feels like being dark for darkness sake. It also borders on believability what some characters go through, only to keep on going. Sure adrenaline and sheer force of will help, but there are limits.

Telling a story out of order is fine and multiple storylines being told in parallel is also fine. But where the start is very structured, the structure becomes more and more unraveled near the end. Maybe the author did this to convey the emotional state of the characters, but it becomes annoying to listen to in the end. With chapters only having a few sentences and adding nothing, I can't help but wonder why it was done this way.

Then the performance: both voice actors are really good. But I wonder why there were two voice actors to begin with? It serves as a disconnect between the two stories. Which would be fine if they'd have two different sets of characters, but they don't. The Tripal in his story seems very different from the Tripal in the rest of the story. Sure it's later in his life and he's gone through some changes, but the difference is too great to make sense. I i don't know if it's the voice actor or the writing, but the Tripal in his story seems like a dumb stoner dude. He's annoying, rambles and his manner of speaking is very disconnected from his actions and character as described in the story. I feel the production would have been better with just the one single narrator.
The audio quality was mixed, it was overall clear and properly mixed. But at times you could clearly hear cuts being made and corrections being re-recorded. I think these mistakes were maybe found quite late into production and corrected using short bits of re-recorded audio, recorded with different equipment and a different environment from the original. The volume was also an issue, not being uniform over the whole length. There was a lot of peaking where characters were shouting. When something was whispered or said in a quiet manner this was often pointed out by the narrator as you couldn't otherwise hear it, this may have been done on purpose, but I feel could have been done better. Especially the peaking and corrections being this obvious should happen with the equipment available today.

This book would have been awesome as a short story of maybe 3-4 hours. As an 12+ hour book it kinda sucks and to think this is the first book in a series is laughable. I understand Amazon wants as much books as they can, but stretching like this degrades quality. Just write one good book instead of a mediocre series.

Another banger from RR Haywood!

Just fantastic. I love love Richard’s writing and this didn’t disappoint. The variety of characters, all of whom you love or just love to hate, makes this a moving and fun listen with an intriguing story. Hurry up with part 2!!

Bloody Brilliant

Very clever story, good characters. Does not shy away from grim realism alongside the fiction. Was just what I needed. Highly recommend for the avid sci-fi consumer. My only disappointment is having to wait for the sequel now - Thanks RR Haywood xxx

written for TV

a slow methodical listen with vocabulary level at maybe a younger audience.

clearly this book has been written to try and attract screenplay for film rights.

I didn't think subject matter had been researched particularly well so quite a poor science fiction.

Wow!

This was the first book I've listened to from this author and they have instantly become one of my all-time faves!
The character development is impressive. The mix of suspense, intense scenarios, intelligent ideas, action, and comic relief is just wow! I cannot wait for book 2!!!!

Haywood always delivers characters that I love

I absolutely love R.R. Haywood. He has the brilliant ability to write characters that you care about and are invested in! Haywood has written some of my favorites found in The Code Series (The Worldship Humility). Character dialogue is also very strong and this is another important factor I look for in books. I love the real, gritty humor. I wish i could do justice to his writing in this review. Just buy Delio (The Hive) and you definitely need to read the Worldship Humility series; It's among my top 5 series I've ever read/listened to.

The narrators in this book are fantastic. Vikas Adam has already been a favorite narrator of mine but Laura Aikman is new to me and she blew me away! Really amazing narration. Amazing book. I really appreciate finding authors like R.R. Haywood and Drew Hayes. These self published authors are in a class above the rest. I cant wait for Fictionland and hopefully more from Delio!

Need more stars!!!!!

That was 13 hours and 43 minutes? Seemed like the blink of an eye. R. R Haywood - can you ever tell a story. Gritty as they come but current and relevant. Gives lots to think about. Amazingly I just finished and I want the next installment - now!!! Both narrators did an excellent job - Best. Day. Ever. Character development off the chart pulled me right in and made me care. Not only was I entertained I was transported to another time and place. So sad R R Haywood has so many other projects going means waiting so long for book 2. Now if he is adding an addition to the Extracted series and Worldship Humanity series
soon I could understand. Great job, great book. Enjoyed the escape.

great new story!

RR Haywood is a master at riveting changing points of view and building stories from backwards to forwards. perhaps one of the best.

I get the point that not everybody sees America like the Americans do but portraying every American agency as waterboarding fanatics this was a little over the top for me.

on the other hand, this is a provocative look of what a super intelligence could or might do to us all. The writing is genius is always.

All that said, I would rather have a fourth Code book come out next and then get back to this.

it’s good but I liked Extracted more

Okay, this isn't the first R.R. Haywood book I do, was looking forward to listening to this one, but it didn’t hit the spot.
The story was cool not going to lie, but some of the characters were undercooked let’s say, plus the whole fact that it needs to step up book 2 doesn’t help, (I am going to get book 2) I hope the characters get there by then,

That’s the characters, but now the story is the good part, The idea of what happens is great and new, I like the fashback a bit more than the rest, but yeah if you are into A.I. and science fiction you will like this
