Summary

A dynamic remastering of the original BBC Radio 4 full-cast serial - Fit the First to Fit the Sixth - which spawned a phenomenal hitchhiking legend.

The original series of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, remastered by Dirk Maggs (director of the Tertiary, Quandary and Quintessential Phases) to give a full, vibrant sound, now with Philip Pope’s version of the familiar theme tune and specially re-recorded announcements by John Marsh.

Join Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Trillian, Zaphod Beeblebrox and Marvin the Paranoid Android in their first series of adventures as they witness the destruction of Earth to make way for a hyperspace bypass, stumble upon the ancient planet of Magrathea, dine at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe and seek an answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and everything.

Peter Jones, Simon Jones, Geoffrey McGivern, Mark Wing-Davey, Susan Sheridan, Stephen Moore and a full supporting cast star in these BBC Radio 4 episodes.

A special 55-minute bonus programme, Douglas Adams's Guide to the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, explores the genesis of the radio series and its incredible success, with contributions from the original cast and production team.

Classic

This book is good, you may think other books are good but they're just peanuts compared to this.

If you've not heard of this classic then where have you been, hiding under a rock? It's the best bang since the big one.

None of the above make sense? Don't panic! Listen and all well become clear.

A classic.

A stellar cast and witty writing.
A must-listen for anyone with a passing interest in science fiction and/or comedy. Bring a towel.

Utterly brilliant

As a 40-something latecomer to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy I'm now kicking myself that I've never listened to it before. It's superbly written, genuinely funny and well acted too. I've already listened to this twice in a week and am now embarking on the Secondary Phase. Loving every minute of it.

Almost the original!

Every version of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is unique, with Adams changing the story a bit (or a lot) every time he adapted it to a new medium. This is the original version first broadcast on BBC radio 4 in 1978, or very nearly as a couple of bits have gone missing (the clips of Pink Floyd and the Beatles, removed for rights reasons) and the music is a re-recorded rearrangement. Some of the differences may surprise those who grew up with the album versions (completely re-recorded with a whole new score and some cast changes) and the TV series - for instance, there’s no Disaster Area in this version (first added to the Rainbow Theatre stage version in the wake of the radio show). Instead you get to meet the Hagunenon Admiral and his battle fleet (which is equally funny if you ask me). The last two eps are quite different to the novel version of the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, but that’s ok too. I love this version, in fact I love all versions of Hitchhiker. Well, maybe not the movie - that was terrible.
