Summary

Mercy and Elvis are back in The Hiding Place, the most enthralling entry yet in USA Today best-selling Paula Munier's award-winning Mercy Carr mystery series.

When the man who killed her grandfather breaks out of prison and comes after her grandmother, Mercy must unearth the long-buried scandals that threaten to tear her family apart. And she may have to do it without her beloved canine partner Elvis, if his former handler has his way....

Some people take their secrets with them to the grave. Others leave them behind on their deathbeds, riddles for the survivors to solve.

When her late grandfather’s dying deputy calls Mercy to his side, she and Elvis inherit the cold case that haunted him - and may have killed him. But finding Beth Kilgore 20 years after she disappeared is more than a lost cause. It’s a Pandora’s box releasing a rain of evil on the very people Mercy and Elvis hold most dear.

The timing couldn’t be worse when the man who murdered her grandfather escapes from prison and a fellow Army vet turns up claiming that Elvis is his dog, not hers. With her grandmother Patience gone missing and Elvis’s future uncertain, Mercy faces the prospect of losing her most treasured allies, the only ones she believes truly love and understand her.

She needs help, and that means forgiving Vermont Game Warden Troy Warner long enough to enlist his aid. With time running out for Patience, Mercy and Elvis must team up with Troy and his search-and-rescue dog Susie Bear to unravel the secrets of the past and save her grandmother - before it’s too late.

Once again, Paula Munier crafts a terrific mystery thriller filled with intrigue, action, resilient characters, the mountains of Vermont, and two amazing dogs.

A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books

"I love books where the story and the characters grow out of the place that they're set, and that couldn't be more true of The Hiding Place, which delivers a satisfying, twisty plot, an entertaining ensemble of locals, and, of course, a pair of intelligent and heroic dogs." (Ann Cleeves, New York Times best-selling author of The Darkest Evening

Likeable characters and story

Note to self: Girl, you got a lot of books in your library, is this one worth rereading? Why yes, self, it is definitely worth rereading.

Now don't go and put this under your pillow at night an think it is going to lull you to sleep, nope, there is a lot going on here and you gotta hear every word to keep up. This is a "take a journey in the car" or "leave me alone world, I am cleaning out the garage" kind of listen.

Fortunately, the performer is superb - its like you are at the cinema with your eyes closed. She is great with both the male and female characters and is smooth when she switches between them. How do they do that? I don't know, but she has it figured out. Anyway, I know I am going to look into other things she narrates, cause she is a pleasure to my ears.

Now, be careful self, the first time you read this book you kinda had an attitude problem with your own little K-9 buddy for a while. Remember, this is fiction about military trained dogs and they are extraordinarily awesome, that's what makes it exciting!

You enjoyed this story because the characters are relatable. The female lead was a strong, independant and capable woman which is demonstrated through her actions. You really appreciated that the author did not concoct stupid bravado in the lead female's head that that made you roll your eyes and think, ...She's about to get in trouble... When she did get in trouble, it was because she decided to take a risk to obtain a worthy goal, not because she was a stupid woman.

There were several mysteries ongoing throughout the story that kept it interesting. Now watch out, this author throws down the red herrings - they are flopping around everywhere.

Congratulations self, this was a good investment. You are going to enjoy it again in a year or two.

I love this series!

The latest Mercy Carr book, The Hiding Place by Paula Munier, is a fabulous combination of mystery, suspense and romance! The Audible performance by Kathleen McInerney, added to the author's words with just the right amount of emphasis, tone changes and voice characterizations. I was enthralled from beginning to end of this novel. I can hardly wait for more to come in the future!

The Hiding Place

I’ve read each book in this series & they just keep getting better. I can get bored with a lot of lengthy books but Ms. Munier has a real knack of keeping my attention focused & even wishing the story continued. This book has more than a few twists & just when I was convinced I had everything figured out, it veered yet into another direction. One thing that keeps me coming back for more is the bond between Mercy & her dog Elvis. Some long held secrets are revealed & relationships are mended. The narrator is a perfect choice in the telling of the Mercy Carr Mysteries. I love this series!!!

One of the Best!

Action packed adventures, mysterious events, spooky rides through narrow windy roads in a white out , bombs, bones and out of sight plot twists, three dog nights , and a hint of romance, too. Truly not a moment of boredom between the covers of this book.
