Summary

Gabriel Allon, master art restorer and assassin, returns in a spellbinding new thriller from number-one best-selling author Daniel Silva. For all fans of Robert Ludlum.

Sometimes the best way to find a stolen masterpiece is to steal another one....

Legendary spy and art restorer Gabriel Allon is in Venice repairing an altarpiece by Veronese when he receives an urgent summons from the Italian police. The art dealer Julian Isherwood has stumbled upon a chilling murder scene in Lake Como, and is being held as a suspect. To save his friend, Gabriel must perform one simple task: find the most famous missing painting in the world.

The dead man is a fallen British spy with a secret: He's been trafficking in stolen artworks and selling them to a mysterious collector. Among those paintings is the world's most iconic missing masterpiece: Caravaggio's glorious Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence.

Gabriel embarks on a daring gambit to recover the Caravaggio that will take him on an exhilarating hunt - from Paris and London to Marseilles and Corsica, and finally, to a small private bank in Austria. Straddling the worlds of art and espionage, The Heist is a pause-resisting tale of intrigue, populated by a remarkable cast of spies, killers, and thieves.

Another great Silva success

Would you consider the audio edition of The Heist to be better than the print version?

Yes I would never get through the print version in any kind of time...

Who was your favorite character and why?

to many well rounded and familiar characters to choose from, all with brilliant incidental details that make them come to life in your minds eye... hang on ask me agin... the Goat.

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favourite?

Like the above George has the pass and rhythm of each character so well defined that is hard to separate them, but may be the goat again...

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

please don't ruin these novels with a 90min film made on shoe string....

Tedious Written By Numbers Thriller

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

By writing likeable main characters. They are too 'American Mid-West' perfect. In fact the whole novel is too American in tone and completely fails to capture the spirit of Italy.

What was most disappointing about Daniel Silva’s story?

The tedious plot. The author completely failed to capture the feeling of being in Venice. I was hoping for something a bit like David Hewson's atmospheric writing.

What didn’t you like about George Guidall’s performance?

He was fine, I've listened to and enjoyed other novels he has narrated. I think it must be the poor material he had to work with

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

Can't get past the narrators delivery

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Can't get past the narrators delivery it completely ruins the story and somehow stopped my brain from following what is going on or even remembering who is who. I stopped at the beginning of chapter 3.

How could the performance have been better?
