About this listen

‘Allon is the 21st century Bond’ Daily Mail

Gabriel Allon, master art restorer and assassin, returns in a spellbinding new thriller from No.1 bestselling author Daniel Silva. For all fans of Robert Ludlum.

Gabriel Allon – art restorer and legendary spy – is in Venice when he receives an urgent call from the Italian police. The art dealer Justin Isherwood has stumbled upon a chilling murder scene, and is being held as a suspect.

The dead man is a fallen spy with a secret – a trafficker in stolen artwork, sold to a mysterious collector. To save his friend, Gabriel must track down the world’s most iconic missing painting: Caravaggio’s Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence.

Gabriel’s mission takes him on exhilarating hunt from Marseilles and Corsica, to Paris and Geneva, and, finally, to a private bank in Austria, where a dangerous man stands guard over the ill-gotten wealth of one of the world’s most brutal dictators…

Would you consider the audio edition of The Heist to be better than the print version?

Yes I would never get through the print version in any kind of time...

Who was your favorite character and why?

to many well rounded and familiar characters to choose from, all with brilliant incidental details that make them come to life in your minds eye... hang on ask me agin... the Goat.

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favourite?

Like the above George has the pass and rhythm of each character so well defined that is hard to separate them, but may be the goat again...

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

please don't ruin these novels with a 90min film made on shoe string....

Another great Silva success

Just as good as when I first heard it. Beautifully read. Ascents perfect. Wonderful rendering.

Wonderful.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

By writing likeable main characters. They are too 'American Mid-West' perfect. In fact the whole novel is too American in tone and completely fails to capture the spirit of Italy.

What was most disappointing about Daniel Silva’s story?

The tedious plot. The author completely failed to capture the feeling of being in Venice. I was hoping for something a bit like David Hewson's atmospheric writing.

What didn’t you like about George Guidall’s performance?

He was fine, I've listened to and enjoyed other novels he has narrated. I think it must be the poor material he had to work with

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Can't get past the narrators delivery it completely ruins the story and somehow stopped my brain from following what is going on or even remembering who is who. I stopped at the beginning of chapter 3.

How could the performance have been better?

Someone else
