Summary

The world's most famous demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren, were called in to help an average American family who were assaulted by forces too awesome, too powerful, and too dark to be stopped. It's a true story, supported by dozens of eyewitnesses - neighbors, priests, police, journalists, and researchers.

The grim slaughterhouse of odors.... The deafening pounding.... The hoofed half-man charging down the hall.... The physical attacks, a vicious strangling, failed exorcisms, the succubusm and the final terror which continued to torment the Smurls.

In this shocking, terrifying, deeply absorbing book rivaled only by The Amityville Horror, a case also investigated by the Warrens, journalist Robert Curran digs deep into the haunting of the Smurl home in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, and the unshakeable family bonds that helped them survive.

Very detailed account. Well read!

I have listened to a lot of these paranormal books and Ed and Lorrain Warren stories are the most complete accounts. They are read by Todd Haberkron who brings the tales to life. I did not' laugh out loud' as one reviewer said. I went to look for another book read by Todd. I would highly recommend this book.

Interesting Paranormal Story Skewed by an Agenda

I'll start with the most distracting thing about this book and that's the performance. I have seen it mentioned in other reviews but I didn't realise it would be so simultaneously laugh-out-loud funny and off-putting at the same time - it's every time the reader puts on a feminine/child-like voice for Janet and the daughters. It's at once hilarious and distracting, completely taking you out of the story.

Speaking of the story, it would be an interesting account of odd happenings with no real explanation except for the fact that everything is skewered and projected through the religious views of the Smurls and the Warrens. I knew going into this that I had to put to one side that they would try to explain everything inside of a Catholic specific context. But it was so over-poweringly pushed onto the reader with no alternative explanations or theories being offered it did make the whole thing feel like a concocted tail that fit their specific world view. If they had have sort the advice of neutral scientifically minded investigators as well this would have been a much more interesting listen.

To me, this whole case was a poltergeist manifestation that took on a religious bent because of the views of the Smurls and that was reinforced by the presence of the Warrens. You will often find that poltergeist cases that are reported by non-practising religious people, agnostics or atheists never manifest as 'demonic'. It's all about the mind and world view of the person/people the events are happening to.

I very much doubt I'll be bothering with another Warren book.

fascinating

Well read...Totally engaging in the way it is narrated.
Also totally terrifying. I do hope the family finally found peace.

Performance was great but story lacked

I have listened to quite a few of these now and i am sad to say this was probably the weakest entry, its still a fairly good read but it is not in the same league as The devil made me do it. Good performance as always though

Awful

Whether you believe in the paranormal/religion or not you should still be able to enjoy a well researched story about a haunting. But I couldn’t.

The story comes across as a messy retelling of a neighbourhood gossip rather than a biography of a factual event, making it hard to care or take even slightly seriously. There was little to no discussion of scientific reasoning or recordings of evidence that were taken and anyone saying they were slightly sceptical changes their mind without any challenge two sentences after.

Ed and Lorraine Warren stir up and aggravate a family, who’ve already convinced themselves they’re haunted, which isolates them until they feel as though these are the only people in the world they can turn to. No doubts to ingratiate the family into allowing their story to be published under the Warrens name.

The poorest choice was the narration of the audiobook. When you already have a subpar script in front of you I appreciate it’s difficult to do your best, but there was no need in a “non-fiction” book to do voices for different characters. It made the story laughable in some parts and I don’t respect the decision that was made for the book to be read the way it is.

Great read!

Fantastic read for any horror lover the story itself is chilling and most importantly true! What a shame for the family. I’d highly recommend this book. I love Ed & Lorraine in films and they certainly don’t disappoint with there books either.
