Summary

Our most commonly held formula for success is broken.

Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be more successful, and if we are more successful, then we'll be happy. If we can just find that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology have shown that this formula is actually backward; happiness fuels success, not the other way around. When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work. This isn't just an empty mantra. This discovery has been repeatedly borne out by rigorous research in psychology and neuroscience, management studies, and the bottom lines of organisations around the globe.

In The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor, who spent over a decade living, researching, and lecturing at Harvard University, draws on his own research - including one of the largest studies of happiness and potential at Harvard and others at companies like UBS and KPMG - to fix this broken formula. Using stories and case studies from his work with thousands of Fortune 500 executives in 42 countries, Achor explains how we can reprogram our brains to become more positive in order to gain a competitive edge at work.

Isolating seven practical, actionable principles that have been tried and tested everywhere from classrooms to boardrooms, stretching from Argentina to Zimbabwe, he shows us how we can capitalise on the Happiness Advantage to improve our performance and maximise our potential.

The good news

This book has already helped me a lot with my depression. It doesn't set out to do any such thing, but I found the scientifically-backed ideas for being happier and enjoying work more couldn't help but have an impact on my mood and relationships. I've just finished it and I'm going back to start it again.

Loved every minute of this book

Really thankful to Shawn for writing and narrating this book and sharing all of his fantastic work and years of hard research with us. The principles provide practical advise for putting into practice all of the "common sense" that isn't "common action" here's to the ripple effect!

A brilliant book with fantastic advice

I've listened to this book twice now and it's fantastic. Great advice backed with scientific evidence showing how success is related to our levels of happiness, rather than the other way round.

If you can get past the first paragraph - it's ok

This is not my kind of book usually. I almost gave up at the first paragraph: "This book will show you how to be more happy at work".

... and also read my sequel, how to squeeze more pleasure from bad sex.

While it was focused on deriving more happiness from work, which kind of misses the point for me, it does have some interesting bits, some good thoughts on the nature of being satisfied, motivating yourself and others and generally living day to day feeling lighter and more joyfully... so... if you're down in the dumps, this is not a bad place to start turning that around.

Simple and powerful

The book was an engaging read and one that I would recommend to all leaders. I started to reflect on my own previous successes at work when team performance was outstanding and realized that these ingredients were responsible for our success. The next step would be to cultivate the habit of regularly using the 7 principles.

there's some really good stuff in there, too slow.

So the book could be done in a fraction of the time. Content is great but it doesn't follow a sequence that is easy to follow.
