Summary

Charles Darwin's masterpiece, On the Origin of Species, shook society to its core on publication in 1859. Darwin was only too aware of the storm his theory of evolution would provoke but he would surely have raised an incredulous eyebrow at the controversy still raging a century and a half later. Evolution is accepted as scientific fact by all reputable scientists and indeed theologians, yet millions of people continue to question its veracity.

In The Greatest Show on Earth, Richard Dawkins takes on creationists, including followers of 'Intelligent Design' and all those who question the fact of evolution through natural selection.

Like a detective arriving on the scene of a crime, he sifts through fascinating layers of scientific facts and disciplines to build a cast-iron case: from the living examples of natural selection in birds and insects; the 'time clocks' of trees and radioactive dating that calibrate a timescale for evolution; the fossil record and the traces of our earliest ancestors; to confirmation from molecular biology and genetics. All of this, and much more, bears witness to the truth of evolution.

The Greatest Show on Earth comes at a critical time: systematic opposition to the fact of evolution is now flourishing as never before, especially in America. In Britain and elsewhere in the world, teachers witness insidious attempts to undermine the status of science in their classrooms. Richard Dawkins provides unequivocal evidence that boldly and comprehensively rebuts such nonsense. At the same time he shares with us his palpable love of the natural world and the essential role that science plays in its interpretation. Written with elegance, wit and passion, it is hard-hitting, absorbing and totally convincing.

Critic reviews

"If Charles Darwin walked into a 21st-century bookstore and wanted to know how his theory had fared, this is the book he should pick up. Dawkins remains a superb translator of complex scientific concepts....he has a way of making the drollest details feel like a revelation." ( Publishers Weekly)

If only more people would read this book!

If more people read books such as this by Richard Dawkins we could finally look forward to putting the whole Adam and Eve created by God nonsense behind us and look at the world through different eyes. Easy to follow and love the functions on audible so I can control the reading according to my own schedule.

Enjoyed this book very much.

Clearly explained, and well narrated by both, it expanded my understanding of evolution by natural selection in technical but easy to follow language. Dawkins' books always makes me stop and think; so being able to pause the book, ponder on a topic and assimilate my own thoughts, then replay a part, is a great way for me to really absorb the information. Another superb book by the author and Audible.

Brilliant!

How refreshing to hear all the evidence for evolution laid out so thoughtfully and narrated so eloquently.

I wish I had heard this fifteen years ago when I was a teenager growing up in a young Earth creationist family, struggling to understand why the real world didn't fit my nonsensical religious worldview.

However I'm grateful that, unlike my ancestors in previous centuries, I now have the privilege of being enlightened before I make important life decisions, thanks to centuries of dedicated scientists and those who educate us in their work, like Dawkins in this work.

the greatest show on earth

Well worth listening to and it has some snippets of awe-inspiring delight, such as Belyaev's Silver fox experiments or Lenski's E. Coli research. Both of which have truly jaw-dropping conclusions. Remember to download the pdfs that accompany the audiobook.
My only problem is Dawkins irritating method of illustrating complex points with stories. This, in itself is a useful way of making a point, but its the way he does it. He gives you the parameters of the story, tells the story, and then tells you that the parameters he used to illustrate his point to begin with are not consistent with the point he was trying make in the first place. It made me giggle more than once, but don't let that take too much away from what is a very pleasurable listen.

Excellent content delivered articulately by Richard Dawkins and Lalla Ward. I will listen to this book again and I'm certain I'll continue to learn from it.

Well communicated

Clearly shows the evidence... Entertaining. Could of been written a little kinder for "nonbelievers" in evolution.

Fills in more than a few gaps

As mentioned at the start of the book I am one of those people who believe in evolution but was not aware of the kind of supporting evidence. This book certainly filled in more than a few gaps.
I have read a few books by Richard Dawkins and find his explanations superb and well read. For me he is the gold standard of how things should be explained. Just a superb audiobook all round.
