Sharing stories is one of life's greatest pleasures and that is at the heart of this book club. Our choices are varied, our opinions sometimes very different, but a passion for a tale well told unites us all.

Meet the co-presenters

Alex Clark
Alex is a journalist and broadcaster regularly seen in the pages of The Guardian, Observer and Times Literary Supplement and heard on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row and Open Book. She’s also a former Man Booker and Orwell Prize judge. She says, I’ve been a voracious reader since I was a young child, haunting the local library whenever I could. I vividly remember falling in love with books by a whole range of women novelists from George Eliot to Iris Murdoch to Toni Morrison to Jilly Cooper (Octavia! Imogen! Harriet!) when I was a teenager. I’ve never really looked back and one of my main occupations is building new bookshelves. Among my favourite current writers are Kazuo Ishiguro, Ali Smith, Maggie Nelson and Rachel Cusk. And I adore thrillers.

Sara Collins
Sara is the author of the critically acclaimed novel, The Confessions of Frannie Langton, winner of the 2019 Costa First Novel Award. She’s also a literary critic and broadcaster for a variety of outlets. She says, Since I was a tiny bookworm desperate to return one stack to the library and check out another, I’ve loved nothing more than reading books and talking about them, so this gig really is a dream come true. I fell in love with gothic novels as a teenager, which proved useful when, decades later, I wrote my own! Anything that holds itself out as a complicated psychological thriller, or has everyone talking about its 'unlikeable protagonist', is an automatic buy for me. But I balance this out through a healthy obsession with chick lit.

Love this podcast

This is a great podcast with an interesting balance of discussion around a book of the week, combining an author interview, readers experience and interview with a narrator. Graham Norton is the perfect host. Brilliant stuff.

I love this book club

I really enjoy listening to this podcast, Graham Norton is just fabulous, I love the honesty of the reviews. I must admit it's costing me a few bob, as I am now busy buying all the highly recommended books.. I think it definitely helps to increase your reading genre especially if your stuck on certain types of books.. Keep going it's brilliant.

A nice natter with friendls

I’m a huge fan of Graham’s and would probably listen to him recite the alphabet, but that aside it’s a great little podcast. I like the fact that we have Graham’s input but also random readers from the general public. I look forward to listen regularly and discovering some new books xx

Relatable

Really enjoying this book club, it is light and breezy and unpretentious. I like the fact that the book group members are diverse, the comments are thoughtful and genuine and there are some good recommendations for reading and listening.

Very entertaining and enlightening

Loved listening to Graham and his guest's uplifting voices. Will definitely read some of the books they discussed. It allowed me to find new author's who I may not normally have found.

Enjoyable

Overall I really enjoyed it, I might actually start or join a book club after Covid. Very few of the books mentioned at any point have I read, most I've not even heard of. Strangely enough, the same week I listened to the episode that Richard Osman is on and recommended The princess bride, I watched an episode of Pointless where he recommends this very book. Unfortunately, my book store doesn't have it on hand so I will have to get it online.

The bookclub I always wanted to have

There could not be a better host for a bookclub than Graham Norton, his chatting skills combined with his love of books makes him perfect for the job. The format and club members are also well chosen, I always look forward to the next episode and already took some titles for my reading list. All in all, really recommend it!

Enjoyable talk about books

Graham Norton’s book club had just been advertised and I decided to give it a go. I had just decided to leave my current book club because I was not enjoying most of the titles selected to read. I am thoroughly enjoying the discussion about the books and the interviews with the authors, so that I tend to listen to each episode more than once. I have not started to read any of the books that are reviewed but like the mix of classic and modern, in fact discussion of books recommended that I have read is something I really like. I feel relaxed about listening but not reading after decades of enjoying books, especially after spending a lot of time trying to plough through books I am not enjoying. I particularly enjoy the interviews with the narrators and hear their views about their work and approach to it. Graham Norton’s tone is just right, serious but not boring, light but not superficial; the reviewers are also engaging and everyone has a soothing voice. Excellent all round for me.
