In this book of key spiritual teachings from unpublished discourses, the great Advaita Master, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, teaches us that we are not limited to the body. Because of our mistaken body identity, we feel separate from what we truly are. Our identification with the body and mind subjects us to endless cycles of pleasure and pain, desire and fear, which cause us to search beyond ourselves for that which we believe we lack.

Story
Upanishads are mankind's oldest works of philosophy, predating the earliest Greek philosophy. They are the concluding part of the Vedas, the ancient Indian sacred literature, and mark the culmination of a tradition of speculative thought first expressed in the Rig-Veda more than 4,000 years ago. Remarkable for their meditative depth, spirit of doubt and intellectual honesty, the Upanishads are concerned with the knowledge of the Brahman, the Ultimate Reality, and man's relationship with it.

The author Sri "M" is an extraordinary individual. His uniqueness lies not only in the fact that at the young age of 19 and a half, he travelled to snow-clad Himalayas from Kerala, and there he met and lived for several years with a "real-time" yogi, Babaji, but also that he should undertake such an unusual and adventurous exploration, given his non-Hindu birth and antecedents. The metamorphosis of Mumtaz Ali Khan into Sri "M", a yogi with profound knowledge of the Upanishads and deep personal insights, is born of first-hand experiences with higher levels of consciousness....

Said to be the world's longest poem, Mahabharata was originally composed in 100,000 Sanskrit verses by the ancient Indian sage Vyasa. Revered as a sacred text within Hinduism, it contains the great spiritual teaching Bhagavad-gita. Krishna Dharma has condensed the epic into a fast paced novel that fully retains the majestic mood of the original. Summary
He alone teaches who has something to give, for teaching is not talking, teaching is not imparting doctrines, it is communicating. The present upheaval of the spiritual tide, the waves of which, traversing nearly half the world, have touched the shores of America, was produced by the Christlike character and divine personality of Bhagavân Srî Râmakrishna - revered and worshiped in India today as an ideal manifestation of the divine glory.
His life was so extraordinary and unparalleled that within 10 years after his departure from earth, it aroused the admiration, wonder, and reverence not only of all classes of people in his own country, but of many distinguished English and German scholars of the 19th century.

This moving account of Sri Ramakrishna is awesome and inspiring. So many subtle questions about the meaning of Life, the Universe and everything are answered here. My best advice is not to think nor rationalize the message, but relax and let it flow.

If you're involved with Vedanta or are interested
I was a member of the Moth (Vedanta Church) for about 13 years in the USA. I thought it was far superior to all the very narrow Christian religions I had been involved with before (this was 25 years ago now). I started because i married a Hindu and left because of divorce, but I never had anything other than the greatest admiration for it.
My one complaint is that there was no formal meditation taught there, I was told that this usually required becoming a monk. This may have changed with the populaization of meditation over the last decade - I dont know.
I did find what I was looking for in the Buddhist Thai Forest tradition which stresses meditation (daily and retreats) and is available to me. Note that many forms of Buddhism do not stress meditation and are heavy into ritual which after practicing (meditation) long enough you realize are just empty trappings. Though you always pay reverence to these rituals of others, really become quite a waste of time after some spiritual progression.. I think it was Sri Ramkrishna who said paraphrased) "You can say my religeon is right, but you should never say another's is wrong". Rituals may aid your state of mind (and in developing a better mind will help develop better kamma), but you can accomplish that without them.Intrinsically on their own they are empty and useless - but if they help you personally.. do it. So my suggestion is Meditate, meditate, meditate and dont get distracted with ritualized religion.

All you have to do is listen once. If your Heart and mind isn't moved by the Gospel of Sri Ranakrishna, then you weren't listening. Go back to the beginning and listen to every word. I now keep a print of Sri Ramakrishna on my alter, a book of his teachings by my bedside, and the Soul of all he represents in my heart.
