This is a life told back to front. This is a man who has lied all his life.

Roy is a conman living in a small English town, about to pull off his final con. He is going to meet and woo a beautiful woman and slip away with her life savings.

Good performance, boring story

I listen to these books while walking to work and I have to say that this was the worst one I've experienced. I kept zoning in and out because of how boring it was and had to keep replaying chapters. Would not recommend.

A different kind of war story

I think this book is being woefully undersold. It's a cracking yarn about a very intriguing character. It's also got an interesting take on WWII, though that doesn't seem to appear in any of the blurb. If you like a well written, tightly plotted mystery and darkly charismatic lead characters then this is certainly one not to be missed!

Clever, but lacks any human touch

Would you try another book written by Nicholas Searle or narrated by Martin Jarvis?

Wouldn't read anything more by this author. Contrived and superficial - and long-winded with it. He can write very suspensefully from time to time, but the central idea of this book is too thin.

Has The Good Liar put you off other books in this genre?

No.

Was The Good Liar worth the listening time?

No.

strong start and end

What made the experience of listening to The Good Liar the most enjoyable?

the characterisation and narration couldnt be faulted

What did you like best about this story?

clearly betty has more about her than meets the eye, it was good fun following roys machinations knowing he would get some come uppance in due course

Which character – as performed by Martin Jarvis – was your favourite?

Roy

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

i didnt hate roy as much as I shouldve, he was after all unrelenting awful but often he just seemed sad

Any additional comments?

the midway flashback story when roy was working for a lord someone or other should just be cut out, adds nothing at all.

Boring

The book was very dull in its plot line, I didn't like any of the characters and felt like they all deserved to be in the situation they were in. I decided life was too short and gave up life listening half way through

Jumpy To start

The book jumps from past tense to now then mid way and back and can be difficult to follow however I persevered and it was well after half way through before I understood the connection of the characters in the complete story. Betty ensures Roy gets his just desert.

Unusual. Well Written. Brilliant Narration.

This book is like marmite. You’ll love it, or you’ll hate it. Some say it is slow moving and boring whilst others say it is well crafted and absorbing. It takes some getting used to as the timeline is unusual and needs some patience, but it is incredibly well done. I did grasp what was going to happen quite early on but it didn’t matter as it was a great listen. Martin Jarvis is a top narrator and he does not disappoint. Thank goodness for him, as this book deserves a class act to create the voice of such an odious and psychopathic lead. There are upsetting scenes and traumatic events. This book has been made into a 2019 film starring Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren, but I’m glad I’ve heard the audiobook first.

Extraordinary performance!

The narrator was a true pleasure to listen to. Briljant, as well as the story itself.
