Enjoyable

Overall, I enjoyed this audiobook. The story addresses some interesting themes that may lead children to think more deeply about the issues facing others.
The story is mostly well read in a pleasant voice that was easy to listen to.
The story is written by an English author and set in England but used American terminology throughout. I wonder whether this is an adaptation for an American audience. I felt that this, along with some of the language used by a 12 year old boy, caused the book to lose authenticity.
Still an enjoyable audiobook though.

What’s with the Americanisms

Good story apart from the excruciating use of American words like diaper, vacation etc instead of nappy and holiday etc. Really got on my nerves. Why would an English author writing a book based in the UK used American words and expressions. Nearly made me stop listening. Not sure if I will listen to any more of her books because of this. Wish she would have more pride in her own culture and language. 😡

Bizarrely translated to American English

My only gripe was that the text was abridged to American English, even though the author and narrator were both British? Bizarre and off putting for Brits. Other than that, a strong story and performance.

great book just a shame about the americanisms

as an oldie im not sure what caused me to listen to this book but im very glad i did.
the only issue i found was some of the americanised language which was incongruous with the rest of the text including 'wind shield ' not windscreen, and 'doctors office ' instead of gp surgery., and many more.
since the book was clearly based in south east england so im not sure why this was done.
otherwise a great story about a serious subject that was educational as well as a good read.
