Summary

DI Vera Stanhope is not one to make friends easily, but when one of her neighbours goes missing, she feels duty-bound to find out what happened. It’s an easy job to track the young woman down to the Writers’ House, a country retreat where aspiring authors gather to work on their novels.

But things get complicated when a body is discovered and Vera’s neighbour is found with a knife in her hand. Vera knows that she should hand the case over to someone else. But the investigation is too tempting and she’s never been one to follow the rules.

Working with Sergeant Joe Ashworth, she starts the hunt for a murderer who has turned killing into an art form.

problematic narration

I found the narration very hard to listen to. it put me off the entire book.

Another good Vera story

I really enjoy the Characters and Vera stories. This is another good one.

I do get a bit fed up with the narrator and the stupid baby voices she gives all the women.
Even when it said in the story that the character had a big booming voice she still managed to sound like a, five year old girl. It's irritating.

Good but not the best.

The story was good enough but the performance by the narrator lets these books down. J Birkett just cannot do accents or characterizations.

Unswitchoffable

Really good listen. I would have listened to it without a break if it wasn't for the need to sleep. As it was I only took a break because it was nearly 3am! Well-crafted plot (I had no idea who the killer was until the dramatic unmasking). A really good sense of place too.

The narrator is astonishingly good at accents. Not many people can get that very particular working-class Northumbrian 'r' that the character Lenny has. A lot of the time I forgot I was listening to an audiobook, it was like a play with very distinct voices.
If you have watched the TV series first, it doesn't spoil the books as the TV doesn't have the rich internal monologues.

Gripping from start to finish. Brilliant

Couldn't put it down. Was a true Vera Stanhope murder mystery right to the finish.

Superb story

Another brilliantly narrated tense thriller with Vera and Joe solving another murderous puzzle. The characters are so well written, as always, by this great author.

The Best Vera Yet!

Really enjoyed this.Like Vera anyway but this had a bit more depth and subtlety than some others.
The plotting and characterisations were good and I wasn’t able to guess ‘whodunnit’ until the resolution.
Thoroughly recommend.
