Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

You live on a picturesque communal garden square, an oasis in urban London where your children run free, in and out of other people's houses.

You've known your neighbours for years and you trust them. Implicitly.

You think your children are safe.

But are they really?

Midsummer night: a thirteen-year-old girl is found unconscious in a dark corner of the garden square. What really happened to her? And who is responsible?

Utterly believable characters, a gripping story and a dark secret buried at its core: this is Lisa Jewell at her heart-stopping best.

I feel like I need another 4 or 5 chapters to really answer a lot of the questions that have been left hanging in this book. Lots of back story for the characters but no concrete reasons for those back stories... I don't want to spoil it for anyone who might want to read this, but you'll know what I mean if you read/have read it.

From a production perspective, I found myself getting a bit muddled between which character perspective was being portrayed each time. I think it might have helped to either provide a longer pause between shifts in the 2 adult women character perspectives, or header them as "Adele" or "Claire". A few times I found myself thinking "Why on earth is Claire talking about homeschooling?" only to realise that a shift to Adele had occurred.

The narration was good and didn't irk me even with headphones on, which is pretty high praise from me (no awful gulping or spitting noises etc.)

I love Lisa Jewell as an author, but overall, this was just ok, and I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It was a bit of a let down.

Too many unanswered questions

I really enjoyed it, I binge listened. The narrator's voice was quite irritating though. I think I would have enjoyed reading it rather than listening.

Good story, annoying narration.

I enjoyed listening to this book, but I have enjoyed Lisa’s other books a lot more. The story was okay, the performances were sometimes a little bit off

Good but not one of her best
