Summary

A bullet-ridden body is unearthed from a buried WWII plane. Dr Ruth Galloway must discover who the victim was - and who put him there.

When DCI Harry Nelson calls Ruth Galloway in to investigate a body found inside a buried fighter plane, she quickly realizes that the skeleton couldn't possibly be the pilot. DNA tests identify the man as Fred Blackstock, a local aristocrat who had been reported dead at sea.

Events are further complicated by a TV company that wants to make a film about Norfolk's deserted air force bases, the so-called Ghost Fields, which have been partially converted into a pig farm run by one of the younger remaining Blackstocks.

Then human bones are found on the farm and, as the greatest storm Norfolk has seen for decades brews in the distance, another Blackstock is attacked. Can the team outrace the rising flood to find the killer?

Critic reviews

Elly Griffiths writes ever-more ingenious detective stories with a powerful sense of place and a varied cast of sympathetic and unusual characters. Her heroine is a winner
Griffiths weaves superstition and myth into her crime novels, skilfully treading a line between credulity and modern methods of detection

The book was interesting and it kept my attention. It was well read and my only complaint is that it didn't last long enough. The story was a bit far fetched but I like the characters and there were some interesting twists and turns in the plot and the ending was more complex than I expected. Elly Griffiths is fast becoming one of my favourite authors and her books seem very well suited to being read aloud. The narrator was very good, but perhaps better when reading female voices than male voices.

A very enjoyable story

I first read this via a library hardback which contained a handy family tree! That said, it was still an enjoyable listen with a somewhat obvious murderer. As ever, it's great to catch up with Ruth and Co.

Clare Corbett's narration is great apart from her portrayal of Nelson, which grates!

Have you listened to any of Clare Corbett’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I think Clare Corbett is getting into her stride now. I enjoyed the narration.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the story. I think this series of books is getting better and better. A large part of my enjoyment stems from the fact that the characterisation is so good. You feel that these people are actually real and you come to care what happens to them. I'll be moving straight on to the next in the series.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Yet again a wonderful & intelligent book by Elly Griffiths. An intriguing & history laced storyline with with well rounded characters that you feel you know after previous instalments. This series has me well & truly hooked. Elly Griffiths has the ability to not only make you care about the main protagonist but also emotionally invest in all the other supporting characters. As a late comer to these books, I have had to stop myself from binge listening as I want to make this series last as long as possible which is not something I have generally felt about some audible books!

Another Brilliant Dr Ruth Galloway Book

Just love this series. I not a scholar I just love something that I enjoy and takes me away from the world for a bit. Love Ruth & her relationship with Nelson. Love that it's set in Norfolk. Just down loaded book 8. Really enjoyable listen.
