Born Eric Arthur Blair, George Orwell (1903-1950) was a British novelist, essayist, and critic famous for his insightful social and political commentary. His personal engagement with real world issues imbues his work with a sense of social conscience that continues to resonate with listeners, and his two most famous novels, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, continue to captivate audiences worldwide.

Jeremy Northam’s readings of Down and Out in Paris and London, Road to Wigan Pier and Homage to Catalonia are difficult to surpass - and freely available on YouTube. But the narrators of this collection get very close. This 33 hour selection is Orwell’s best work - minus the poems - in my view. I don’t mind at all that Animal Farm and 1984 aren’t in there. After Penguin’s botched audiobook version of their Essays collection from earlier in 2021, this comes as very welcome.

At last - Orwell’s best essays well read

Brilliantly narration plus excellent selection of insightful non fiction texts = SUPERB AND STIMULATING AUDIBLE EXPERIENCE

Orwell continues to be as relevant today as he has ever been and these texts not only shed light on the world in which we currently live but provide supplementary insight into his major works 1984 and Animal Farm. Highly recommended.

I am so pleased to have this collection
