Summary

Lady Marian Lawrence is in London to snare a rich husband to save her family from ruin - a difficult task given her biting wit and lack of beauty. Hiding her true self, Marian is about to win the wealthy and amiable Lord Darley - until the detestable Reginald Montague blocks their path to the altar.

Reginald Montague has vowed to never marry and is determined to keep his bestfriend Darley from being snared by a fortune hunter.

A master of subtle stratagem, Reginald sets out to transform Marian's dislike for him into desire and is caught in his own trap even as Marian struggles to keep her true self a secret and her heart her own.

I really did not like the reader

The reader only used an English accent for the dialogue; everything else was read with an American accent. I found this very irritating.

A totally enjoyable smile creating story!!!

Well read and well written this wonderful story is full of humor and laughter as well as unexpected twists and turns and all with a giggle. I fell in love with the characters and truly wish there were books that have as much fun with themselves as this one does. If you look at books seriously and search for literary brilliance and deep enlightenment then please walk away and spare us all your thoughts because anyone who loves a hysterical historical romance with fun fluff and enjoyment can't but adore this story.

oh, yeah....
well with a credit altho' it does have a HEAT factor of Zero (as in zip zilch nada) it doesn't matter in the least!!

Interesting book

There were many surprises in this book. It did not follow the “romance formula” that I end up reading over and over again.
I wanted to read more and was disappointed when it ended!

Awful Narrator good story

The story was fun and light, fine for a romance and not at all steamy. But the narrator is terrible. Multiple very ignorant mispronunciations like irrevelant but the worst was “ear boobs”! So jarring and distressing and frequent! I was embarrassed to be enjoying the story with such a clueless narrator.

Perils of Pauline

If you are looking for a hot steamy romance this is NOT your book, but if you like light opera and melodrama and semi-humorous romantic caper movies this might be what you are looking for. The reader’s voice lends itself to an air of light absurd comedy rather than impassioned romance. Think more like Jewel of the Nile than Pride and Prejudice. The humor is more of the absurd and ridiculous kind than of Austen’s intellectual biting wit.

Dnf

Why is the narrator American? Part of the escape in listening to these types of books is the British accent. Her dialogue accents weren’t terrible (even though she didn’t say valet the way a Brit would) but I didn’t enjoy the flat American accent for the rest.

Story didn’t draw me in enough to continue.

Delightful

I really like the overall story and performance, it was nice not to have an over abundance of sex too.

The Genuine Article

Loved the story. It is witty and amusing. The hero and heroine are strong and grow to love each other in spite of their early hostilities. Look forward to the rest of the series. The narrator was very good.

Delightful!

A fun read. The characters are likable, each with their quirks. I like stories with characters that grow and blossom. The leading man finds a strong woman who he grows to appreciate. He slowly lets down his guard and she finds a man who can love her. It’s a lovely romance!

Entertaining book

This is a great story about 2 sisters and their mother coming to town to catch a rich husband for one or both of the girls.
There are also 2 guys who have decided they will never get married. Of course the 2 guys meet up with the 2 girls and the boys seem to change their minds. They scramble to choose which girl they want. The sisters are different in personality but both are good characters. There are run down estates, a jugglar/magician, the snooty ton and the wild and crazy cousins. One of the most entertaining characters is the valet to one of the two men. He is funny, exasperating, nimble and quick witted. I was extremely interested through most of the book, but I thought the ending was rushed and sort of flat.
