This book works. It shows that that the naughty step, sticker charts and controlled crying are NOT the only solutions. Many parents struggle with getting their toddlers to sleep, picky eaters, respect, tantrums, discipline, throwing, biting, hitting, communication. All this is normal. What is important is that you don't base your whole relationship with your child on rewards and punishment.

Summary
Parenting trends come and go. Gentle parenting is different - it isn't a label for a precise set of rules but a method of parenting that embraces the needs of parent and child while being mindful of current science and child psychology. It means parenting with empathy, respect, understanding - and boundaries.
In The Gentle Parenting Book, Sarah Ockwell-Smith provides a trustworthy combination of what-to-expect information and gentle-parenting solutions to the most common challenges faced by parents with young children. Sarah addresses a wide variety of topics, including coping with a crying baby, introducing solid foods and creating healthy eating habits, potty training, starting nursery and school, sibling rivalry, tantrums, whining and sulking, aggressive behaviour and much more.
And for those parents who have previously used a more authoritarian style of parenting, there's plenty of advice - and reassurance - on making the transition to a gentler approach. For many, gentle parenting comes as a relief because it chimes with their deepest instincts about the best way to raise their children.

Surprisingly Judgemental
Although i am parenting in a manner that would be encouraged by this book, I did not think it appropriate that there was such judgement towards alternative choices. Parenting comes with vast amounts of internal pressure, no parent needs additional prejudice placed on them. Especially when those choices are not going to have impacted upon children in a way that will amount to much later, let alone in the detrimental way that is implied in this book.
I really enjoyed what I read of Sarah's gentle sleep book, as it felt reassuring that someone was saying to parent in the manner I was, was good. But I was too sleep deprived to have any idea if that was as preachy and condescending towards other choices as this book is.
Disappointed tbh. Expected far more.
A child does not have poor relationship with food because they drank from bottles.
As much as a child does not have poor attachment with their parents because they employed some gentle sleep intervention when their mum could no longer emotional or mentally manage in the manner they had been.
I breastfeed, bedshare, and use baby led weaning with my babe, all of which Sarah may say is biologically normal and as such a natural choice, but it feels more like she'd give me 3 gold stars at this point...

A beautiful book. Should be required reading.
I can't praise this book enough! It's just beautiful through and through. It speaks to the instincts about parenting I had deep inside. That society truly expects too much from children and we should be more patient with our children and show them the kind of love and respect we believe we deserve as adults. My only regret: Not knowing about this book and getting it sooner. The narrator does a good job of narrating the book. The information is delivered clearly and at the right pace.

Terrible narrator makes it painful to listen to the book
Honestly I find it very hard to listen to this book. I’m sure the content is great but the dull voice of the narrator is ruining it for me. She sounds like a very boring robot. Such a shame the author didn’t read it herself or choose a decent narrator…

Life changer
This book gave us a lot of great advice and new things to try, but the biggest way it helped us was to validate what we were already doing instinctively, but felt guilty about, because it was so far from what everyone around us was saying we should be doing. It gave us confidence, got us on the same page and made us more consistent.

It wasn’t a great book
There were a lot of parts on this book that basically makes you feel like a failure. I hated the part that tells that if you don’t breastfeed your child he/she can basically get really sick from formula even cancer or not be intelligent enough. I mean… there’s a lot of women who struggle with breastfeeding I think is better to feed your child than not.. on the other hand there’s useful information on how to handle tantrums and different stages on you child development which I liked ..
