Summary

Geneva, 2012. When a Russian intelligence officer approaches MI5 with vital information about the imminent cyber-sabotage of an Anglo-American Defence programme, he refuses to talk to anyone but Liz Carlyle. But who is he, and what is his connection to the British agent?

At a tracking station in Nevada, US Navy officers watch in horror as one of their unmanned drones plummets out of the sky. Is this a Russian plot to disable the West’s defences? Or is the threat coming from elsewhere? Liz and her team hunt for a mole inside the MOD in a race against time to stop the Cold War heating up once again...

Critic reviews

" ... a must-read for fans of contemporary spy fiction" ( Publishers Weekly)
'Rimington's best work demonstrates a flair for narrative, with a sense of authenticity and an insider's grasp on the pressing issues of the day' ( Washington Post)
'Liz Carlyle is an MI5 agent with the traditional thriller-heroine mix of dysfunctional personal life and steely ambition' ( Daily Telegraph)
'For a pacy page-turner, she's a safe bet ... Rimington is particularly strong in her accounts of procedure, unsurprisingly, given her past role as Head of MI5' ( Independent)

Another spy story

Clearly written by an authority though I found the denouement a bit far fetched. Difficult to put it down, though - I'll listen again.

Disappointing

Not what I'd hoped for from someone who'd been on the 'inside'. Rather more of a more grown up Mallory Towers type of read, somewhat to do with the way it was read. Definitely not John le Carre.

A tolerable read

This is my first book by Stella Rimington, and it didn't really live up to my expectations. I quite liked the main characters, but the action and the plot were rather mundane. Idon't think that I would bother to buy another by this author.

Audiobook reader untutored

Would you try another book written by Stella Rimington or narrated by Julia Barrie?

Julia Barrie has obviously watch too much hello hello! Her attempt at animating this tale and her inadequate French accent spoil this audiobook. Also, I would have hoped that Stella Rimington Would have been far more articulate In Her employment of,And use of English vocabulary in her descriptions. The author must be well educated but there is no demonstration of a command of descriptive Adjectives which might serve to illuminate a rather dull plot

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Difficult to say

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Julia Barrie?

Anybody more competent

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
