Story
In 2012, in a Middle Eastern souk, CIA agent Miles Brookhaven was attacked. He was infiltrating rebel groups in the area and no one was certain if his cover had been blown or if the act was just an arbitrary attack. Now, Liz Carlyle and her Counter Terrorism unit in MI5 have been charged with the task of watching the international under-the-counter arms trade and British Intelligence forces have become increasingly concerned that extremist Al-Qaeda jihadis are building their power base ready to launch another attack.

The friends of the title are Ted Mundy, British soldier’s son born 1947 in a new independent Pakistan, and Sasha, refugee son of an East German Lutheran pastor and his wife who have sought sanctuary in the West.
The two men meet first as students in riot-torn West Berlin of the late 60s, again in the grimy looking-glass of Cold War espionage and, most terribly, in today’s world of terror. Spanning 56 years, Absolute Friends is a savage fable of our times.

Six weeks before she is due to take up her position as the first female head of MI6, Amelia Levene vanishes without a trace. A great listen
I read some of the other Poor reviews and have to say I don’t entirely agree with the comments. The way the narrator is portrayed by some is as if she has asthma and a 1970s comedian approach to accidents. I find these comments erroneous.
This Liz Carlisle story had a more gripping plot and while some of the twists were a little predictable the book was still well written. I listen To books While I am detailing cars. This actual book took my mind off a couple of days of mundane polishing and thanks to Liz Carlisle this car now looks amazing!

Disappointing
Not what I'd hoped for from someone who'd been on the 'inside'. Rather more of a more grown up Mallory Towers type of read, somewhat to do with the way it was read. Definitely not John le Carre.

A tolerable read
This is my first book by Stella Rimington, and it didn't really live up to my expectations. I quite liked the main characters, but the action and the plot were rather mundane. Idon't think that I would bother to buy another by this author.
