Story
It is said that all who live belong ultimately to the Undying King. In the shadowy lands of Shyish, Nagash, God of Death, calls forth his soulless legions to reassert his dominion. His dread advance begins with the free city of Glymmsforge, bastion of Azyr in the Realm of Death. Standing between Nagash and his prize are the brooding Anvils of the Heldenhammer, an ancient host of Stormcast Eternals, and Lord-Castellant Pharus Thaum, guardian of the Ten Thousand Tombs. As battles between the living and the dead rage throughout the Mortal Realms, the War of Heaven and Death begins anew.

Within this book you will find Hammerhal, a fantastic new novella from Josh Reynolds: Dark forces stir within the bowers of the mysterious Hexwood. A great warhost of Tzaangor beastkin, creatures devoted to Tzeentch, the Architect of Fate, defile the once verdant lands of Ghyran. All that opposes them are the noble Stormcast Eternals of the Hallowed Knights. Reforged in resplendent sigmarite and wielding the lightning of Azyr, few can stand against these heroes. Also within this book is a host of awesome short stories giving you a flavour of the many warring armies that exist within the worlds of Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

Great introduction but maybe not the best book
I was just a little disappointed to find the Stormcast et al so flat after coming from Plaguegarden - some broader world building was nice to take in but I felt it lacked the depth of the titles I have just spun through, and I accept that was going backwards!
Whilst giving it his all, the narrator was not the easiest listening of an evening, which is no criticism. It just didn't combine for me.

reboots are tough
a reboot for a franchise like warhammer fantasy will always be a hard undertaking. The fight scenes are good, the character development is ok. But the biggest negative is the worldbuilding. all we really get is "oh yeah, chaos destroyed everything". fair enough, but where are we, where is Azyr, or akshi? are we in the physical world in this scene or the warp?

The beginning of Age of Sigmar
Gates of Azyr is a good start to the Age of Sigmar storyline. It has its faults but is still a great story. At such an early stage in the storyline, the Stormcast Eternals aren’t fully developed as individual characterizations but this isn’t telling of the author. Chris Wraight is easily one of Black Libraries top authors and he does the best he can with hands slightly tied. Definitely worth reading if you are interested in Age of Sigmar.

Absolutely worth the listen! The performance alone makes it worth spending the credit. The story is a great introduction to AoS, the only reason I don’t give it five stars, is because of the length.
