Story
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are no strangers to peculiar cases. Be it the dilemma of an Indian princess on the run, perfectly healthy people dropping dead as divine punishment, being challenged to a duel, a heartbroken and suicidal young man, a beautiful woman claiming to be Mrs. Holmes, a little boy who loves his dog, an old Scottish ghost that traditionally haunts husbands of pregnant women - there is very little they haven't seen (and solved). But, besides regular adventures, there are quite a few questions - Where was Holmes during the Great Hiatus?

There is a persistent and incorrect idea, reinforced by countless film misrepresentations, that Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were always staid and dull British chaps of middle years (or older), with Holmes a spry, cranky, and impatient eccentric, and Watson a white-haired and portly Boobus Brittanicus, a la Nigel Bruce. Students of the true and Canonical Sherlock Holmes know this to be a falsehood.

In these pastiches of the sacred writings, written when he was 19 and 20, August Derleth has recreated the London of Sherlock Holmes. It does not matter that the familiar name has become Solar Pons, or that the familiar Baker Street has become Praed Street - something of the nostalgic charm and fascination, of the remembered quickening of the pulse and the familiar settings of the original London of Sherlock Holmes, has been recaptured in these pages. And what intriguing titles there arc to these 12 pastiches, chosen from among a greater number!

Eve Allerthorpe, eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty, is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit. Summary
From the curious clauses in a miser’s will, to a plea for help on a tiny scrap of paper, these six cases, from the early years of Holmes’s career in the 1880s, present a singular collection of mysteries for the world’s first consulting detective to resolve.
What is the significance of the arrival in the post one morning of a cardboard packet of children’s bricks? Who is the man found dying in a deserted warehouse in London’s East End, and what is he doing there? Why have the names of a couple of young honeymooners been removed from a hotel register? Sherlock Holmes must find the answers to these and many other puzzling questions if he is to bring these cases to a successful conclusion. In this new collection of Sherlock Holmes short stories, well-known author, Denis O. Smith, accurately recreates once more both the atmosphere and the excitement of Conan Doyle’s well-loved original Holmes tales.

Really enjoyable stories
I don't listen to a lot of short stories as I'm not always a fan, but these were great. Just the right length and mystery to get involved in the story and outcome. The stories took Sherlock Holmes to a number of locations to solve different mysteries in his own unique style. The stories were really well narrated and suited the characters.

Excellent collection of Holmes stoties
Dennis O. Smith has proven he is a master storyteller in the style of Doyle himself. It is hard for pastiches to have the "feel" of the Canon. This collection of shorts is excellent and can pass as a Doyle work. If I had one critical comment it is that Watson sounds much older than Holmes, a point that we know is not true. However, narrator Kevin Green pulls of some remarkable voices throughout the collection

Cozy Fun
An enjoyable collection of stories done in the classic style that felt quite comfortably at home among the Holmes canon. The author does a good job with both Holmes and Watson's characters and has created a nice collection of short, interesting mysteries with curious features that thoroughly entertain while avoiding falling into the trap of striving too hard for melodrama.
