About this listen

When Josie Welford settles in the idyllic West Country village of Kings Duncombe, she honestly believes she can bury her past. The widow of one of Britain’s most wanted criminals, she knows what it’s like to be an outsider and fervently wishes for a fresh start in life. But she soon finds herself on the wrong side of the locals and she begins to wonder just how far their threats will go.... A feisty and highly likeable character, Josie leads the listener through a tantalizingly twisted murder mystery to a deliciously rich ending.

Josie, the narrator, is the widow of a gangster who has taken every catering class available to the mature student and then bought a pub in a village in Somerset. When she becomes wary of the beef which has been supplied to her by a local farmer, she begins a bit of research on mad cow, and the legislation precipitated by the development of the illness in humans. The copper who, 20 years ago, put together the case that sent her Tony to prison shows up and turns out to have left the force and become a Food Safety inspector. The two of them form a wary alliance which gets stronger as the villagers begin working together to drive them both out of the area.
The characters are believable, the situations are fraught but not violent, and the mystery is pleasantly novel.
The reader is fabulous, and she gives a distinct voice and, someetimes, accent to each of the characters.
I've just happily bought the second book about these characters.

A New Type of Detective

This novel is a refreshing change from hard boiled detective fiction. The characters are well developed and the main character who narrates the story is truly human and believable as both a pub landlord and sleuth. The pace of the story seems just right and the reader is spared from needless details to keep the story flowing and alive. A great read when you want a book you can pick up for an hour and use to switch off from work.

Refreshingly different take on mystery novel
