Summary

"If I could have foreseen the future, I would have married the first man who asked me!"

Tongues were set wagging when Elizabeth Markham's glamorous young parents were killed, sinking their only child to the unspeakable class of poor relation. Forced to live with her cruel, miserly uncle Julius, Elizabeth is forbidden to partake in the season's festivities. Marriage is her only escape, and she enacts a daring plan to trick her way into the duke of Dunster's exclusive house party, to snare one of the eligible dandies sure to dance attendance on her.

Her plan proceeds swimmingly, as Elizabeth flirts with all but the arrogant Lord Charles Lufford, considered to be quite a catch. She ignores him thoroughly until her uncle discovers her deception, and Charles saves her - by announcing their engagement! But Elizabeth's troubles are far from over, for in her absence she has come into an inheritance. And her uncle, along with one other sinister party, would rather see her perish than receive it.

What a voice!!

I am seriously considering buying the kindle book so I can finish the story silently. The reader has no idea of punctuation and is just barking at the words and her attempts at different voices are pitiful. Wish I'd listened to the sample as i'd never have wasted my credit on it! Awful.!!!

Acceptable story incompetent reader

The story would be acceptable, what makes it unbearable is the reader, who has no idea how to respect the correct punctuation and the natural flow of the narration.

Fab story, bad storyteller

Is she American? I don't like the voices at all and the intonation and lack of adherence to punctuation. The "English" accents sounded half-American. Great book though.

Good story ruined by a terrible narrator.

The headline says it all. What possessed audiobooks to hire this narrator? She sounded like a child reading a passage in an elocution lesson, not knowing the meaning of the words. Everything. about it was awful - her pronunciation, her intonation, her character voices. A truly painful listen.
