Summary

Told from the point of view of nine-year-old Benjamin, the youngest of four brothers, The Fishermen is story of an unforgettable childhood in 1990s Nigeria.

When their father has to work away, the brothers take advantage of his extended absence to skip school and go fishing. At the forbidden nearby river they encounter a madman, who predicts that one of the brothers will kill another. What happens next is an almost mythic event whose impact will transcend the lives and imaginations of both its characters and its readers.

A literary feast. Loved this book.

A tragic and enchanting tale of brothers - the fishermen - of superstition and revenge. Pardon the pun, but I was completely hooked.

Encapsulating

What a fantastic book. The writing was extremely encapsulating with poetic use of language. The narrator had me gripped from start to finish. The story is one of tragedy and it was very moving.

Tragic

I am tired of black trauma. This had my heart stop and palpitating on several occasions. I hope Audible allows authors read their own books. Even though this voice actor tried, mispronounced names and cities was annoying and unnecessary. Saying that, he tried. He really did. I am so sad after reading this. I am ready for happy stories. I cannot keep reading and reliving these horrific tales.

The dangers of self-fulfilling prophecy lyrically told

This is a beautifully written book that is deep and meaningful, with a story that gripped me. Every time I had to put it down I desperately wanted to know what would happen next and continued to think about, and worry about, the characters.
I also really enjoyed the reading given here. I'm new to audiobooks and thought this narration was perfect, just what I'm looking for from this medium.

excellent narrator

Good story well told. Harrowing and reply sad. Emotive unique. Wonderful to be immersed in the lives of a family in Nigeria even though the sadness so hard to bear.

Engaging but heartbreaking

I've never been to Nigeria but felt I'd walked through its streets, smelt it's smells and heard it's people's woes and joys.
The story though delivering moments of the pure joy of life that only happy children can experience, was heavily offset by this relentlessly tragic tale. It was heart punch after heart punch and in the end I just wanted it to stop. I finished listening to it because that's just what I do but honestly, do not attempt unless you are gifted with a clean bill of mental health!

Family, love, hate... Restoration

Well written book, although at times I wish there were fewer metaphors and the story was just told.
Overall a good book, enjoyed listen to it. The narrator did a good job bringing the characters to life.

Pretty relatable/ realistic storyline. I appreciate how the culture was portrayed.
